Terrible, but not Serious

After last week's terrible fiasco (pun intended), I figured this time I'd go for something a little more humorous . Since I already used that AFLAC shampoo commercial (which has to be the most terrible thing I'm gonna post today), I had to come up with two new candidates. After some long hard consideration, here is what I came up with:

WHAT'S MORE TERRIBLE:

Dee Snyder's attempt to be a movie star with his movie "Strangeland"

or

Jared Leto's attempt to be a rock star with his band "30 Seconds to Mars"

?

A few extra tidbits on our two contestants for you: Dee Snyder not only starred in "Strangeland", he wrote it as well; and "30 Seconds to Mars" performed the song that played during the credits of the movie "The Core" even though Jared Leto wasn't in the movie. As usual, I'll give my answer at the end of the day in the comments section.

um, i guess Dee Snider's Strangeland is more terrible. I know nothing about either, but i figure Strangeland looks like nothing more than a bad movie, and if a big budget major motion picture is willing to use leto's band in their credits w/o him being in the movie, then taste aside, it's probably a farily competent song . . .

Its very possible I've asked something too obscure here, as Cookie also had never seen "Strangeland" nor heard "30 Seconds to Mars", so I'm beginning to think this one's pretty out there. I considered just asking whether actors who try to be rock stars are more terrible than rock stars who try to act, but figured I'd go with something more specific cause that just seemed way too general. Then I didn't want to use something too obvious like Britney in "Crossroads" or something. Maybe I should have used Billy Bob Thornton's attempt at a singing career, specifically his song "Angelina" (check out the lyrics ). But alas, its too late now. Maybe the better question is which is more terrible: this week's "which is more terrible" or last week's?

I had to step away from the console and think about this one, but Jared Leto's band is more terrible.

Dee Snyder only tried to make a horror film. Sure it was bad, but that's okay. It wouldn't be the first time a bad horror movie was made. If he had tried to adapt "Catcher in the Rye" then we have issues.

Just based on the name of the band they seem lame and generic. Something they thought was cool and zany when they came up with the idea after a night out on Sunset -- or wherever the cool kids hang out these days. Whatever the situation, I'm sure there were several high fives exchanged.

I highly doubt anyone else besides those that QC'ed The Core heard their song during the credits. Anyone who saw it in the theater (minus Milkshake) more or less rushed out as soon as the credits began and demanded their money back.

john and i don't seem to have any problems answering this weeks "what's more terrible?" What's the matter with the rest of these guys?

Posted by: texasbabyface at October 10, 2003 01:15 PM

They're a bunch of sad-sack lazyasses. Just like me

Posted by: Yams at October 10, 2003 01:23 PM

I'm sorry.... Jared who?

Posted by: iendive at October 11, 2003 01:12 AM

Jared Leto, check here for his IMDB page if you want, but basically he was in "My So Called Life", "Urban Legend", "Fight Club", "Requiem for a Dream", and "Panic Room".

i still contend that 'league of extraordinairy gentlemen' is the most terrible thing ever.

ahem.. I know who Jared Leto is, I've actually seen Prefontaine too... that was supposed to be my answer :D , with so many actors turning into band musicians the best you could come up with is Jared Leto, who's movie career was soo hyped at the start but now has turned out to be relegated to supporting roles. THAT's terrible! ;p

Man, is it me or has this little game of ours gotten too serious. Maybe it's the bad blood between the Yankees and Red Sox that's spilling over. Perhaps next week's installment should revert back to basic staples of everyday life like a pen and a pencil.

Geez, I think John is right. Anyone else wanna come up with a "what's more terrible"? Its getting tough to come up with options that are not gonna be taken as me trying to snipe at someone, which is really why I ended up going with two pretty obscure choices instead of, say, Eminem, Snoop Dogg, or Britney Spears and J-Lo, Keanu Reeves, Kevin Bacon, or Bruce Willis or something. This is a stupid thing that's supposed to be fun. Really everyone, just don't take it seriously. Trust me, from here on out with these (and including this one) I am trying to be as goofy as possible, even if its hard to tell. I'm not a very subtle guy, and usually when I'm trying to be controversial, there's not much question about it, right?

Anyway, my answer is Jared Leto's attempt to be a rock star is more terrible, pretty much for exactly why John said. Dee Snyder's attempt at a horror movie was, in my opinion, an earnest one, most likely cause the guy likes horror movies and thought he had a good idea on his hand (I'll give him this, at least it was original, unless I just missed seeing the movie or movies he ripped off). Jared Leto though, I dunno, maybe he's a big fan of pop music and always wanted to be doing that instead of acting, but I'm skeptical of that. On top of that, from the little bit of his band I've heard, its not very original at all, and I'm sure for the most part goes largely unnoticed because its just like everything else out there. Kudos for both for giving it their shot, but to me anyway, Jared Leto's forray into the pop music scene is more terrible than Dee Snyder's attempt to make a horror movie.

that's funny something happened to the text of my previous post. It was supposed to say: iendive can't type worth sh**

No need to censor yourself, swear away. I gotta implement smilies for everyone. There's a hack to put them in comments for bloggers like me who use Movable Type, but I looked at it and its pretty complicated so I haven't wanted to try to tackle it yet. Anyway, just trying to keep the pot from boiling over is all

Gotta go with Dee Snider on this one. I narrowly avoided going to a "Strangeland" test screening. I came up with some lame excuse not to go as I sensed disaster. I was later told by attendees that I had dodged a bullet. I haven't heard Jared Leto's band, but I am told "Strangeland" is absolutely unwatchable.

I thought I would also include the following icing on the cake:

No Sean Connery, dammit!

That picture is priceless, by the way.

Here is what is more terrible!

Dee Snyder is a freak and hoped to capitalize on that by making himself the freak in a horror film. He hoped to frighten and entertain and shine his sharpened teeth to further a failing career that only had the life-span of a tiny match. The difference between Leto and Snyder is...people know who Snyder is, and perhaps some even hoped he would succeed. I saw the film in the theater because I got curious (you may laugh and make fun now). Who the fuck is Leto? Why the fuck does lhe have a song on a soundtrack for a summer film? Why the fuck was the film (The Core) so bad with all the talented people involved? Why does an audience have to suffer half-baked music (saw the movie, heard the song) because somehow a talent singing a ditty sells more tickets? (It's the dumbest fucking theory that only an e channel watching marketing guru asshole could dream up) Anything tied to "The Core" is so much more terrible than anything Dee Snyder could do, even if the guy shook that asshole Schwarzenegger's hand.

Next week on "what's more terrible?": a box of hand grenades vs. a frisbee

Posted by: fhqwhgads at October 12, 2003 07:56 PM

Would that be a Wamo or another version of frisbee?

Posted by: Ponnerbell at October 13, 2003 07:21 AM

Matt,

You saw "Strangeland" in a theater?!!

Posted by: Cookie at October 13, 2003 09:23 AM

Stumbled upon this question a year late I see....but will answer anyway. I have seen Strangeland and have a copy of 30 seconds to Mars, Does that make me a dork? Stangeland was pretty terrible but it is what it is, a horror film, and some pretty sick scenes too boot...it was what I expected it to be.
Jared's band....well I will admit the only reason I have a copy is because I was curious, I think he's pretty hot, and own Reqium for a Dream and Fight Club, two favorite movies of mine. The band though NOT my type of music at all, really isnt that horrible. Its the typical trendy teeny bopper stuff thats out there today like Linclon Park, actually they sound a Lot alike. I personally like punk, old classic rocks etc, growing up in the 80's and being in my 30's I dont care for all this new trendy music. But Jared really can sing for what its worth, and I am sure he hates it but he looks pretty damm good in whatever hes doing. Sorry buddy your hot deal with it.
So in answer to your question I would say neither, time for a new question!
