Firefox 1.5

The good news is that Firefox 1.5 just came out and it kicks ass. The bad news is that at work our network is so screwy that for some reason I can't install extensions on it, so I have to continue to use the older and much slower version :sad In other news, I've totally lost my voice, and am reduced to communicating in a harsh rasp or through whispers. That means that finally Pao-Pao can get a word in edge-wise at work I suppose :lol Tonight my Dad's taking me out for dinner at Club 41 (home of the world's best caesar salad) and then tomorrow I'm taking the day off from work as a sort of present to myself, so this'll be the last quiz of the week:

clue #1

Update - Nobody's made a guess yet so here's another clip:

clue #2

Update #2 - Man, it is crazy slow at work right now, so here's another clip to liven things up:

clue #3

Update #3 - Just got back from lunch at Eat n' Park and there's still no guesses so here's the next clip:

clue #4

Update #4 - You guys stumped or bored? Here's another clip:

clue #5

Update #5 - Still no guesses so here's another one:

clue #6

Update #6 - It's getting late in the day, so I'll try to post another clue or two after this one, but after that this thing will be headed to extra innings:

clue #7

Update #7 - Dave and Matt won again, so with that, I can now enjoy the rest of my birthday (and bring on the salad! :lol). Here's the rest of the clips:

clue #8, clue #9, clue #10, clue #11

Busy Week Ahead

I had a three day weekend, but man it doesn't feel like it. Suffice it to say, this was a fairly stressful and weird one. Anyway, it's back to work and I don't have any more days off for a while. Not for almost three weeks! :lol It's supposed to get pretty busy at work between now and then, and I've got a couple movies I've got to get to this week, so I'm going to be kept plenty occupied; and when I get to the Christmas/New Year's break, I'm going to really enjoy it. Anyway, happy Monday everyone, here's today's quiz:

clue #1

Update - Everyone's still waking up I guess, so here's another clip for you:

clue #2

Update #2 - Sorry, I've been a bit slow with the clues, but here's the next one:

clue #3

Update #3 - We're quoting the wrong movie in the comments, so to get back on track, here's another clip:

clue #4

Update #4 - Not even one guess yet so here's a new clip:

clue #5

Update #5 - Still no guesses but I'm trying to get as many clips up as possible for you so here's another one:

clue #6

Update #6 - I always jinx myself by saying this, but it's getting late in the day, and this may be the last clue for today cause I've gotta get outta here soon. I'll try to get another clip up in a bit though, but otherwise we're going to extra innings with this one:

clue #7

Update #7 - Ok I'm off. If nobody gets this before the end of today, then this'll continue through till tomorrow, so here's today's last clip:

clue #8

Update #8 - Well, no one guessed it yesterday, so the quiz continues today (Tuesday). Here's the next clip:

clue #9

Update #9 - Still not even one guess for this one. Guess you guys are pretty stumped. Good thing I have a ton of clips for this one. Here's the next one:

clue #10

Update #10 - I think it's pretty clear that none of you have seen this movie. That's not surprising since it's the kind of movie you'd only really see if you watch a lot of movies on cable. In any event, the clues just keep on comin'. Here's an actress who's voice you might recognize:

clue #11

Update #11 - Riggs finally got it through some heady deductive work. I know nobody else has seen this movie, but here's two last clips for you:

clue #12, clue #13

King Kong

I went and saw King Kong at the Arclight last night, and it was a pretty crazy scene. I got there extra early, at about 5:40 or so, because I knew it would be a heavily attended screening, and I'm glad I wasn't later than I was. They tried to foil the typical plan of holding spots in line for people by not allowing anyone to check in at the table as usual, and instead sent someone down the line to check everyone in, so if someone held a place for you, it wouldn't matter because it couldn't get you a ticket. This proved to be a bad thing for a couple of the people who came, because they didn't get there till after the person had already passed us in line, so they could only go to the end of the line and hope that there were still tickets when the lady got to them. Apparently there weren't tickets for them though, so Matt and Kelly weren't able to get in, and I'm not sure if Paola showed up, but if so, I don't think she got in either. I felt really shitty about the fact that we couldn't all get in, but unfortunately there wasn't really anything any of us could do.

I really enjoyed the movie, as did J-Krue, although I think we enjoyed it more than anyone else there. Jen thought it was really cheesy, but she seemed to have the most negative view of the film. Everyone else was somewhere in the middle, although it sounded like most people thought it was pretty good. I thought overall the effects were quite good, although there were definitely some that weren't so great. My only real problems with the film were that I thought it took way too long to really get started, and the character development in the first hour or so before they even get to any of the action wasn't really paid off very much later on, I thought. Also, Jack Black I think was miscast in this role, but it didn't seem that everyone else agreed with that. Overall I liked it though, and would even go see it again while it's on the big screen.

The previous quiz proved to be way too obscure for anyone, so I'm sorry about that. Kinda takes the fun out of it when you don't have any clue about the movie being quoted I guess. Then again, it's probably no fun when it's extremely obvious what it is. With that in mind, today's quiz is also (hopefully) a little obscure; but I've been wrong about that before...

clue #1

Update - No guesses yet so here's the next clip:

clue #2

Update #2 - Still no guesses, just painful memories. Here's the next clip:

clue #3

Update #3 - Are you guys stumped again? I thought this one might be another toughie. Here's another clip:

clue #4

Update #4 - I've got a bunch of clips for this movie so I might as well put another one up:

clue #5

Update #5 - Still no guesses so here's another clip:

clue #6

Update #6 - Man, did I pick two movies in a row that nobody's ever seen? Somebody musta seen this. Here's a new clip for you:

clue #7

Update #7 - Nobody's even made a guess at this one yet. I guarantee this movie is not nearly as obscure as the last one was. Here's the next clip:

clue #8

Update #8 - I may put up one more clue before the end of the day, but otherwise for the second quiz in a row this is gonna go into the second day. All these clues and not even one guess so far? What kind of movie nerds are you? :lol Here's the next clip:

clue #9

Update #9 - Still no guesses and I'm going home for the day, but I figure 10 clips is enough for one day. If nobody gets it from this clue, then this'll continue tomorrow:

clue #10

Update #10 - Well, no one got it yet. Hell, no one's even guessed at it yet, so this quiz is being held over for another day. Here's the first clip of the day:

clue #11

Update #11 - Still no guesses so here's a new clip:

clue #12

Update #12 - Ok, in light of the fact that everyone seems totally stumped, here's a clip that has a voice that should be pretty recognizable in it:

clue #13

Update #13 - I guess that last clip didn't help after all. Maybe this one will:

clue #14

Update #14 - I'm out of audio clips, so I'm gonna have to resort to giving you guys actor clues. Hopefully you figured out Kevin Costner is in this movie from the last two audio clips, but in in interest of wrapping this up, here's two other actors who were in this movie: John Amos (who you can hear in clips #3 & #5) and Rae Dawn Chong (who you can hear in clips #4, #11, #12, & #13). If that doesn't help you guys at all, next I'll give you the director.

Steve-o is The Man

My friend Steve-o is The Man. Literally. Today Steve-o graduated from the San Bernadino Sheriff's academy and is now officially an officer (deputy, actually) of the law. This Saturday we're gonna get together with him and celebrate his graduation, but I guess we're going to have to do it in a legal and orderly fashion without all the usual illicit items and activities. So anyway, congrats to Deputy Steve-o :smile

If you have any tickets you need fixed, leave your requests in the comments and he'll hook you up.

Match Point

Man, this has been a busy week. I've been out late every night this week, and this weekend I'm gonna be busy too, meeting Dave's brother and celebrating Steve-o's graduation. Last night I got to attend a really cool screening of the new Woody Allen film, Match Point, after which Woody Allen spoke, along with the cast of the film (including Scarlett Johansson and Brian Cox, two of my absolute favorite actors these days). They were all dressed up for the LA premiere of the movie (except Woody who just looked like how he always does in photos and what have you). If you can track down pictures of the cast from last night, I'd recommend it as Scarlett Johansson was almost falling out of her rather low cut dress and Brian Cox was wearing a suit with a pink shirt, pink tie and pink socks :lol

I won't say too much about the movie itself and spoil it, but it was probably the second best Woody Allen movie I've seen. Now, keep in mind I've only seen I think six of his movies now, but it was a really great movie. It was very reminiscent of what I think is his best (of the ones I've seen, anyway), Crimes and Misdemeanors, although it didn't have the alternate humorous storyline that Crimes and Misdemeanors did (which is why I think that's the superior movie, because the stuff with Woody and Alan Alda in that movie is some of the funniest stuff I've ever seen: "Idea for farce..."). However, both that movie and Match Point are similiarly themed, and really fantastically executed.

Afterwards there were the usual irritating questions from the usual sycophantic assholes, with the stupidest questions being either how did Woody manage to create such a "succulent, luxurious film" or some crazy looking guy who asked Woody Allen what was the last CD he bought. Anyway, despite the usual morons in attendance, the evening was quite enjoyable, and I would tell anyone who's a Woody Allen fan that it seems that his streak of crappy movies is over, so don't miss Match Point

This week I picked two movies so obscure that even amongst such a die-hard group of movie fanatics, none of you had seen them, so I figured for Friday I'd try a change of pace. Rather than make it really hard for you guys, I'd make it hard for me, and try to pick a big blockbuster-type movie or big mainstream movie and see if I could find the obscure quotes in it that won't give it away too easy. Hopefully I've done a decent job, otherwise this is gonna be over quick:

clue #1

Update - The answer's still out there, but from this point forward I think it's just a matter of time before someone gets it:

clue #2

Update #2 - No more guesses yet, so here's another clip:

clue #3

Update #3 - Maybe I'm just not taking enough time in between clues here, but otherwise maybe I actually did manage to get some clips that make this movie harder to pin down (or maybe the clips are just too short :lol). Anyway, here's the next one:

clue #4

Update #4 - I knew it was just a matter of time. Drew got it, so here's the rest of the clips:

Sheriff Steve

This weekend was pretty fun. Saturday night I got together with Steve-o & Juliette, Dave & Jen, Jon, Edrich, Justin, Emi and Juliette's step-brother (who was here from Australia) and we all celebrated Steve's graduation from the San Bernadino Sheriffs Academy. We were also all supposed to be meeting Dave's brother, but he flaked (Dave said "it must run in the family" :lol) because he had too much work to do. We all met at Dave & Jen's house, which only Jon & myself had seen, and then we went over to dinner at the Star Cafe in Montrose. This was only the second time I'd seen Steve-o since he started at the Academy back in June, so it was really nice to see him. He told us all about everything he's been up to, and we hounded him with questions about the law and what's legal and all the cool interesting stuff about being a cop, and he showed us his badge and gun and a rubber bullet and stuff like that. Anyway, it was just nice to see everyone again, and it was a great night.

Tonight I've got passes to go see Good Night and Good Luck (which I saw a month or two ago), and afterwards George Clooney, David Strathairn, Frank Langella & Grant Heslov are going to speak. I wasn't really planning on going because they hadn't announced the Q&A, but in light of who will be there, I think I should probably go check it out. Anyway, here's today's quiz:

clue #1

Update - Well that didn't take long, Matt already got it, so here's the rest of the clips:

clue #2, clue #3, clue #4, clue #5, clue #6, clue #7, clue #8, clue #9, clue #10

December 13, 2005

Clooney & Co.

I got to see Skeletor up close, and I don't mean Paris Hilton, Lindsay Lohan, Nicole Ritchie or either of the Olsen Twins.

Last night I saw Good Night, and Good Luck. for the second time, and I actually liked it a lot better this time. Maybe it helped that George Clooney, Frank Langella, David Strathairn, Ray Wise and Grant Heslov were there to talk about it afterwards, but I don't think so. I still think the movie's a bit thin (if you take out the woman singing, the archival footage and Robert Downey Jr.'s totally superfluous subplot the movie would be maybe around 55 minutes long), but it's still pretty good for the real scenes. Clooney and those guys contend all the extra stuff was for pacing and all, and maybe so, but I mean, do you really need to slow the pacing down so much in a movie that's only 89 minutes long? Whatever, I'm nitpicking. It's a good movie and I'd recommend it.

The biggest disappointment of the night came when Diane Salinger got to ask a question when it looked like they'd actually overlook her for once. If you've never heard of Diane Salinger, don't feel too bad, she's a barely-known actress, who only stands out to me because she's at all these damn Variety screenings, she always positions herself as close to front and center as she can, and she always practically jumps out of her chair raising her hand to get called on to ask a question to some actor in an obvious attempt to just suck up to them so they might want to work with her. Her questions are always along the lines of "You're such an amazing actor and so dedicated to your craft, how do you do it" and things of this ilk. Last night they kept calling on everyone else, but she looked like she was about to jump out of her skin she was straining so hard to ask a question that I guess they finally took pity on her and called on her :nono

Anyway, today's quiz is so easy that I'm almost embarrased to post it; but I don't want a repeat of last week's debacle, and besides, last night I got in late and didn't have time to pick through some difficult movie for a bunch of really obscure quotes, so instead you get a bunch of humorous ones. I hope you enjoy em:

clue #1

Update - As predicted, today's was super easy and Cookie got it right off the bat. Here's the rest of the clips though, and for the most part they're pretty entertaining:

clue #2, clue #3, clue #4, clue #5, clue #6, clue #7, clue #8, clue #9, clue #10

Unconventional Hotness

After taking A-LO's dare to post a nude picture of James Cromwell in the King Kong thread, she came down today and we discussed her rather odd tastes in some guys (this all started with her admitting she was attracted to Bob Hoskins), and I thought I'd like to see a more complete list of the guys that she's attracted to who are not conventionally attractive. Then I thought I'd open it up to everyone if there's any famous people out there that they've got a thing for even if they'd generally not be considered attractive (or 'teh hawt' as they say on the internets). This means Koga's pretty much eliminated, since the girls he finds attractive range from strippers to supermodels, and this also means that this is not the place for Steven to be gushing over Naomi or Katherine Bailess. If no one else has any unconventional hotties to name, then I figure at least we can all gasp in horror at A-LO's list :lol

Pop Quiz, Hotshot

I kinda want to keep that last entry up here cause I get the feeling it's a discussion that's not finished yet, but here's today's quiz in case you can't come up with unconventionally hot people:

clue #1

Update - Dave got it after just one clue, so here's the rest of them:

Just To Get Caught Up

Here's a little recap on a couple things that have been going on with me lately. Last week my sister Rebecca moved out to Austin, so now all the male members of my immediate family live in the LA area and all the female members live in the Austin area Rebecca took a lot of her stuff with her, threw away a lot, and left some here for storage or to be moved out at a later date. One of the things she left out here (because she couldn't figure out how to get it out there) is her pet corn snake, which she left in my care. So now for the first time in 10 years I've got a pet again, and will probably have it for at least a couple months I'm sure. I'm not really sure how I'll get it out to Rebecca either, but I'm sure we'll figure something out eventually.

For my birthday my other sister, Johnetta, got me a CD and a book I had on my wish list. The book I started reading right away because it sounded like a rather interesting one. The book is called "Go Ask Ogre: Letters From a Deathrock Cutter" and is a series of letters this girl, Jolene Siana, wrote to her favorite "rock star" back when she was in high school in the late 80's. The person she wrote to is the singer of the band Skinny Puppy, which happens to be one of my favorites, so that was what first piqued my interest, but it sounded plenty interesting beyond that. Jolene was a girl who was borderline suicidal and was into self-mutilation and was just very, very lost, and for whatever reason began writing all these letters about herself to Nivek Ogre (his real name is Kevin Oglivie), and did so for a couple of years. It turned out that Ogre kept all the letters and 15 years after she had started writing to him, he mailed them all back to her and she decided to publish them all as a book. I thought it sounded pretty fascinating, like a diary with a rather unique twist, and I'm about a third of the way through it and it is a quite interesting read so far. It's also kind of bizarre to be reading a book from a woman who is now 36 and lives in LA and apparently works as a waitress somewhere around here. I guess screenwriting pays better than bookwriting does.

Prior to that I had been reading the Stephen King book "Everything's Eventual", but for the most part it was pretty bad, with one really fantastic exception. I don't know if anyone here has read that book, but I would wager that the story "1408" really stood out to them, because it was one of the best and creepiest short stories I'd ever read. I enjoyed it so much that I bought the audiobook CD version of it and added it to my music collection. I see it's got an IMDB page because they're supposedly making it into a movie, but I don't know how well it will translate into a movie because it's really got a short story feel to it, so it's more like an hour-long Twilight Zone episode type thing. Anyway, if you get a chance, check out that book or check out the audio of it if you've got an hour and a half to spare.

Speaking of spare time, here's today's quiz:

clue #1

Update - For the first time this week we're going to a second clue! And here it is:

clue #3

Update #3 - I'm back from my client lunch and there's no more guesses so here's the next clip:

Howard Stern Has Left the Planet

I figured I should post something about this, even though I'm not the world's biggest Howard Stern fan or anything. Just like Jason Voorhees in Jason X, Howard Stern has left Earth and will from now on be in space. Ok, that's not entirely true. He's no longer going to broadcast on "terrestrial radio" (also known as "the radio") and is from now on going to be on satellite radio. This means he'll be able to swear and there won't be any more commercials. This also means it's gonna be $13 a month to listen to him, which I am pretty sure I'm not gonna pay, since I've generally only been able to listen to him for maybe 10 minutes to an hour in the mornings, depending on where the commercials fell.

While I do think that a lot of Howard's stuff is silly, and particularly don't like the strippers/bimbos he has on, nor do I generally like his celebrity guests, his show has been truly fantastic in parts over the years. The best part of every show was always the first hour before they brought in any guests and the last hour when they'd just do the news. The "bits" in between were occasionally funny, but they weren't the real reason to tune in. In some ways, The Howard Stern Show was a reality show, but for radio. The most interesting and entertaining thing about it was just hearing them all talk to each other about what they were doing with themselves, and their ability to goof on each other and occasionally fight with one another. Even though Howard became famous for the naked women and lesbians and all of that nonsense, the thing that I think most fans of the show really enjoyed was the "real" aspects of it, and the unscripted bits at the beginning of the show, and then them all laughing at the silly things in the news at the end. I worry that with all the restrictions having been lifted with satellite that Howard will just go for all the sex content he can get and lose sight of what's really good about his show, but I guess we'll know that in another month or so. Anyone with Sirius, be sure to let us know whether the new show is any good

Laundry Mouse

Today is a big day. Not only am I going to get my snake (or rather the snake I'm tending to) a mouse today, but I'm also going to do my laundry! This is a short week, so get your quizzes while you can, cause there's only gonna be four more for 2005, beginning now:

Update - No guesses yet so here's the next clip:

Update #2 - Still no guesses so here you go:

Xmas Time

So I got the snake a rat last night, instead of a mouse, and I forgot to do my laundry after all. The rat proved to be too large for the snake, so even though the snake killed the rat, he couldn't eat the rat, so now I gotta get the snake a mouse. Looks like it's just gonna be mice for ol' Mr. Snakey. Looks like I'm gonna do my laundry tonight after I see Munich. Here's today's quiz:

clue #1

Update - I figured this one would be tougher than it was, but Drew and Cookie guessed it on one clue, so here's the rest of the clips:

Munich

I had a really late night last night. After work I rushed over to the Arclight for the last of the Variety Screenings: Munich. There was no Q&A afterwards, but the movie was long, so I didn't get home till about 10:30 or so after stopping off to pick up something to eat. After eating I went to do my laundry and discovered I was out of fabric softener, so I had to go back out and buy some. So then I finally got my laundry underway at around 11:15 or so, and didn't get it all done and folded until about 3 am or so. I wasn't able to get a mouse yesterday with all that going on, and I might not be able to tonight either because we're having a get-together after work. So that's what's been going on with me.

I guess I should say a few words about Munich though. I gotta say, it was pretty good. It wasn't the best movie I've seen this year, or Spielberg's best or anything like that, but it was really pretty good. It felt almost like a sort of throwback to older spy movies from the 60's and 70's, although it's a lot more serious because it's based on true events, obviously. There are some very intense scenes with bombs and shoot-outs and what-have-you. It was very well acted too, so it was an all-around good movie. I'll be curious to see what other people think of it when it comes out.

It was kinda weird being there at the screening last night when they talked about all the previous screenings they've done, and how I remember being there with J-Krue for the first one, The Thing About My Folks It seems so bizarre to me to think that this has all been the same series, because of how the screenings were only about half-filled for the first half of them or so. But by the time it got to December, they were pretty much all selling out, and it became a bigger and bigger hassle to go to each one, with the ultimate nightmare being for King Kong. It was a really great screening series though, and I'm glad I got to see as many good movies as I did and to see as many interesting interviews as I did. I'm very thankful that J-Krue alerted me to their existence, and I hope I can go again next year Enough about that though, here's today's quiz:

clue #1

Update - No guesses so here's another clip:

clue #2

Update #2 - Still no guesses:

clue #3

Update #3 - No guesses yet, so even though I've got some more obscure quotes from this flick, I'll move along to some that might be more obvious:

clue #4

Update #4 - Ok, that apparently didn't help so here's another one:

clue #5

Update #5 - Beuscher & Lambro cheated and found out the answer, but haven't posted the answer so the quiz is still up for grabs. The bad news is that they're not going to participate since they know the answer, so there goes like two-thirds of the people who participate in this silly daily quiz thing Here's the next clue:

Update #6 - Riggs finally got it so here's the rest of the clips:

Last Quiz of the Year

Well, this is the last quiz of the year. I'm off work after today until January 3rd, and since I'm not gonna be sitting in front of my computer all day for the next two weeks (and hopefully no one reading this will be either), I wouldn't be able to do any updates. Anyway, I'm going to change the format when I resume the quizzes in the new year because currently these things are taking way too much of my time to do. If anyone's got any suggestions for a different way to do the quizzes, I'm all ears. Otherwise I was thinking about maybe just posting three quotes from a movie in the morning and then I'd post the answer the next day, or something like that. Anyway, here's the last quiz of 2005. Enjoy

clue #1

Update - Since Riggs already got it, I'm going to skip some of the "hard" clips I had for this one and just go right to the funny ones, cause those are more enjoyable:

The Movies That Were: 2005

As I've done the last two years, here is a list of all the movies I saw that were released in 2005, and how much I liked them on a scale of 1 to 10. Just as before, I consulted a list of all the movies that were released this year, and hopefully it's a very thorough list so that I haven't missed any. As I've done the last two years, here is what each number means:

10 - Arguably my favorite movie of the year
9 - I really really liked it and am anxious to see it again
8 - I thought this was a great movie, although I'm not dying to see it again right away
7 - I thought this was very enjoyable, even though I wouldn't say it was a great movie. Most likely it was either a very solid film or a guilty pleasure

6 - I thought this was better than average, but nothing really stood out too much

5 - I wasn't really sure if I liked it or not

4 - Mediocre at best, but not so bad it infuriated me

3 - Really dull, bordering on annoying me

2 - I hated this movie. Offensively bad

1 - Beyond bad to the point where it is so bad it's fun

Since there is always some confusion about this, please note that it is arguably better for me to rank a movie a 1 than a 2, since at least a movie with a 1 ranking can be laughed at, while a movie with a 2 just irritated me. Also, as always, these are just my own personal rankings, so if you disagree, that is fine, I'm only speaking for myself at this point in time. Please be aware that how much I enjoy a movie changes over time with the more times I watch it and the more time that passes, but these are my reviews here at the end of the year:

I watched six fewer new films in 2005 than I did in 2004, and considering how much I went to the movies this year, I would attribute that to the fact that with us being as busy as we were at work this year, I was not able to watch nearly as many movies for work as I had been in previous years. Interestingly, I have given a higher average score with each year I've done this, with the average score going from 5.4 for 2003 to 5.64 in 2004 and now up to 6.04 in 2005. Maybe with not watching as many movies at work I was able to better choose movies I had wanted to see, and as such enjoyed them more. Who knows. You may also want to note that I did give one movie a 1 rating this year after not giving that rating to any movies last year; however if I had seen Catwoman last year I would definitely have given that movie a 1, because that is the best unintentional comedy since Battlefield Earth, in my opinion. Also, even though I awarded a 10 to six movies this year, there was really no doubt in my mind which was my favorite movie. Even though it hasn't had a wide release yet, and won't until February (if it does even then), The World's Fastest Indian was definitely the most enjoyable movie I saw all year, and it will be what I'm rooting for if it gets any nominations.

So there you go, kind of a nice way to end the year here on ye olde blog, wouldn't you say?
