Walk the Line

Last night I got to see Walk the Line at the Arclight, and it was a particular treat because the film doesn't come out for another month. I have to say, I really liked the movie, but I think a lot of that probably stems from my respect for Johnny Cash and because I really like his music. Now I'll admit, I've never been a hard core fan of his or anything like that, and the only album of his I own is a greatest hits album I've had for more than a decade or so; but the songs of his I am familiar with I've always loved, and I had great respect for the man for his career, from what little I knew of it. The movie was a good movie, but I don't think it was a great one. The great things about it were definitely Joaquin Phoenix and Reese Witherspoon's performances (and, amazingly, they both did all their own singing in the movie, which is very impressive, trust me), and the casting of some of the other famous singers (who were all basically unknown actors, as far as I could tell). The story is not an unfamiliar one regarding rock stars, in that Cash came from nowhere, had some childhood tragedy, grew up and had problems with drugs, but eventually overcame all that to have a long, legendary career. The movie focuses mostly on Cash, but it is also centered around Cash's long time courting of June Carter in the 50's and 60's. I won't give too much away, but to me it was not as good as The Aviator or Ray (last year's two standout biopics), in that the story of Cash maybe wasn't quite as fascinating as the stories of Howard Hughes and Ray Charles, IMO. The performances and the music definitely carry Walk the Line, and make the movie most definitely worth watching (unless you're familiar with Johnny Cash's stuff and you hate it, of course). Anyway, I would reccomend the movie to people, but don't expect it to be the favorite to win the Oscar or anything. I will say this: it did inspire me tonight to go order a bunch of Johnny Cash's CDs (used, of course) from Amazon :smile Ok, it's Friday, so here's the last quiz for the week:

elvispanda:

"Wing Commander"?

Yams:

Nope, but there's a new clue up for you :smile

J-Krue:

I only listened to 1 clue and got it. "Independence Day," right?

J-Krue:

This is one of my favorite overheard conversations: when I saw this film in the theater, as the end credits rolled, the guy behind me said to his friend, "Well, they can stop making movies, 'cause they finally got it right."

A-Lo:

I really dug the Goldblum-Hirsch combo. Naturally in my blockbuster fantasy a Jewish computer nerd WOULD save the earth.

Yams:

Mr. Krue is correct, it was indeed ID4. I would definitely give clues #6 & #10 a listen, as I think they're pretty funny. They really did finally get it right with this one, didn't they? :lol

Im guessing She* wasnt there last night.

fhqwhgads:

I should be ashamed of myself. I've seen that guilty pleasure of a turd film so many times.

Yams:

Unfortunately, no, Reese Witherspoon and Joaquin Phoenix didn't make an appearance at the Walk the Line screening last night. I had been hoping they would, because they sometimes have the main actors show up, even if they weren't announced beforehand (like Jake Gyllenhaal and Peter Sarsgaard showing up on Monday to Jarhead), but last night was just the producer and director; but they were cool too.

Shame on those of you who didn't guess ID4 before Mr. Krue did some 7 hours after the first clue was posted :nono :lol

You know, one of the fun things about doing the quiz, is when I get a quote I really want to use, but I'm not sure if it's too obvious or not, so I don't use it at first. Then I hope nobody will get it and eventually I'll get to use that clip I like. Today I had wanted to try to get to #6 (Will Smith yelling that he coulda been at a barbeque) or #7 (Bill Pullman commenting on how quickly everyone can turn against you), but Mr. Krue foiled my plans! :lol

Another thing that's fun is to try to figure out how many clues it legitimately would have taken me to figure it out. I think that I might have had a chance after the 3rd clue today, but if I hadn't guessed it on that, I might have needed to wait till the 6th clue. At the very least I would have got it by the 7th clue, I know that for sure. Good job to Mr. Krue for knowing it just based on the first clip. :biggrin

iendive:

no here's a fun thing to do: http://www.tk421.net/character/
at first I came out as Westley Crusher,so of course I took it again, but I came out at this Kosh alien from Babylon 5.. have no idea, but anything is better than WC (you know what that stand for in the UK, right?)

Yams:

Oh oh, I know! It stands for "with cheese" right? Just like that "Royale with cheese" thingy they were talking about in that movie with that guy? Right?

Here in 'murica we got water-free closets and we ain't got no damn royals. That's right. Here we use the crapper after chowin down a Presidential with cheese and a side of freedom fries. Love it or leave it, y'all.

Limeyluva:

Hey now.
Don't be dissin' my peeps y'all.
We don't have to flush the urinals in public loos.
How's that for royalty.
