Pretty Good Weekend

It's been a pretty good weekend. Not great, but pretty good. bowlnin.jpgFirst off, I got to see Nine Inch Nails live for the third time (second this year), and it was a pretty good show. I had decent seats, but the Hollywood Bowl (where they played) isn't the best place to see a show like that. The sound was fantastic, but even with decent seats like I had, I was still pretty far away (although I was in the center). Anyone who's real curious to read about the show (like Dave, for instance :lol) should go here and read what myself and others who attended had to say about it.

The Red Sox qualified for the playoffs this weekend, although it's only pretty good because they're the wild card team again, with the Yankees winning the AL East Division for about the 10th or 11th time in a row (maybe more, I dunno). The Red Sox were the wild card team last year though and went on to win it all, so maybe lightning will strike twice. They start their title defense Tuesday against the White Sox in Chicago, so it's a Pink Sox series I suppose :lol

Finally, Serenity didn't exactly tank (it came in second overall with aprox. $10 million), but it certainly was not what the members of the Cult of Whedon were hoping for, and the poor showing definitely puts a sequel in doubt. I would imagine that word of mouth would have little effect on this movie in a positive way simply because all the cult members were out diligently pushing it in the weeks leading up to this weekend, so whatever damage they were going to do was already done. I predict it will fall off by at least 50% next weekend and will maybe hit $25 million in total box office domestically. Supposedly Universal said if it did $80 million worldwide box office then they'd make a sequel, but I dunno if the rest of the world can deliver more than double what the US is going to, so that's probably the end of the crew of Serenity; and it does beg the question of what will be next for Whedon. My guess is another TV show, but who knows.

I didn't end up going to see Into the Blue after all, and that movie tanked even worse than Serenity did, so I guess that should further tarnish the notion that Paul Walker is a box office draw; and it should call into question Jessica Alba's ability there as well (after Fantastic Four did so well this past summer). Instead of going to see that, J-Krue and I today went and saw A History of Violence, and I think we both liked it. It wasn't great, but we did both enjoy it. I think the ending kinda left too many things up in the air, but sometimes an ambiguous ending is good. I'm sure I'll see it again at some point (though maybe not in the theater), and I'll develop some more definite feelings about how it ended.

This week should be a somewhat busy one for me in terms of movie-going. I may end up going to see three different screenings this week (The Squid and the Whale, North Country and The Thing About My Folks), and then at some point this coming weekend I am going to really try to go see Good Night, and Good Luck, which at this point is probably the movie I'm most looking forward to seeing for the rest of the year.
