I went to see Jarhead last night with J. Krue and Jen, and afterwards Sam Mendes (the director) spoke, as did Jake Gyllenhaal and Peter Sarsgaard, who both starred in it. If you haven't heard about it, it is about a guy who joins the marines and goes through training then gets sent to the Gulf War (the first one) to be a part of Desert Shield/Desert Storm. It's somewhat like Full Metal Jacket in that way, with the first part being about the training, and then the second part being about the war. Even though the movie borrowed heavily from Full Metal Jacket in some scenes and with some dialogue, it's nowhere near the movie that was (which isn't really shocking, at least, not to someone like myself who puts Kubrick up on such a pedestal :lol). Generally we all seemed to be pretty underwhelmed by the movie, and kind of felt that it tried to be so impartial in its telling of this story that it didn't really have a voice at all. It kind of played like a movie which is sort of an anti-war movie at times, and yet it very much glorified marines, and seemed like the kind of movie that marines would absolutely love. I guess in that way it's sort of like what many people feel about our current situation in Iraq, in that most people seem to be against the war there, but are supportive of the troops. I think that it was an incredibly beautiful movie, visually speaking (although I'm by no means an expert on that), but it just seemed to be lacking at its heart. Anyway, the Q&A afterwards was the typical stupid questions, but there was one that may have even topped the guy who asked Charlize Theron to marry him: a gay man in the back of the theater thanked the director for including a shower scene, and asked Jake Gyllenhaal if he would like to try "playing for the other team" and go out with him. Needless to say the rest of the audience spent the rest of the Q&A underneath our seats. Anyway, here's today's quiz:
Update - Nobody's guessed it yet, so here's another clip:
Update #2 - No new guesses so here you go:
Update #3 - Another clip for y'all:
Update #4 - The answer's still out there, so here's another clip:
Update #5 - Gettin' kinda late, so this may be the last clip of the evening:
Update #6 - Ok, no one got it yesterday, so I'll keep it going with a new clip:
Update #7 - John finally got it, so the answer's in the comments. Here's the rest of the clips:

I picked up the book in the store once and was reading passages. It seemed like it could have been "Catch-22" for the gulf war generation, but it doesn't sound like the film quite had that bite. Like a good American, I didn't buy the book but was thinking about watching the movie. I'm curious what the reviews will be like.
"See the film critics are calling..."
God, I hate that. As though critics gather in a room, putting their heads together to decide on what they're going to collectively call a movie. If that were true, they would never get a review out. They'd be locked away, still fighting over what to call "Undercover Brother". Then one day, Micheal Medved would emerge, bearded and gaunt, bruised and bitter, "We have arrived at a ruling on "Undercover Brother"! Critics are calling it...mixed at best! No wait, it's bootylicious! No, it's a triumph of a rollercoaster ride that will tug at your funny bone and punch you in the heart string!"

That person's gonna be REAL happy watching Brokeback Mountain. A film which I do want to see, although I have to admit I always have to restrain from giggling like a schoolgirl when he says "I wish I could quit you!" But it's a cornball line which would make me giggle no matter who he was talking about. Just had to make it clear that it's a dialogue-related giggle, not homophobia-related giggling. Because any guy who giggles would be one hell of a hypocritical homophobe.

J. Krue said after the movie that Jake Gyllenhaal's people are apparently really trying to avoid him being typecast because of Brokeback Mountain, or trying to avoid having him become the poster child for gay cinema or something; because he looked absolutely stupefied last night when that guy in the audience asked him out. You could tell he didn't just laugh it off, but it wasn't a homophobic reaction. I wonder if he's getting this kind of treatment here and there on the streets or whatever. Anyway, I'm excited to see Brokeback Mountain too, and I think there's a screening of it in another 2 or 3 weeks.

I know the "takes head, gives head" line is from something taking about decapitations, but i just can't place it. Cheep joke in a bad horror movie.

I never saw it, but my guess is: The Relic?

John is correct, it is The Relic. Gotta love a movie where Tom Sizemore plays the lead. I've put up the rest of the clues for anyone who cares. Good job, John :smile

So . . . I may be handicapped completely playing your sound clips game, as I've never seen most of the movies that are up here, but I'LL BE DAMNED if you can get Audra Lindly of Mrs. Roper fame past Texasbabyface!!

Yeah, I was pretty sure that was her, but I didn't want to confirm it because I think that might have made it too easy to guess the movie, vis a vis an IMDB search for her. Anyway, I'm surprised to find out that Texasbabyface is not a huge fan of The Relic :eek

That movie blows. I read the book as well. Very mediocre. I couldn't believe they made it into a movie.
Mrs. Roper was a ho.

For some reason I can always pic out Penelope Ann Miller's voice in a crowd. It's a gift.

I'm homophobic and yet I am disgusted by sex with my horny wife. I'm quite a conflicted landlord.
