Pretty Good Weekend

It's been a pretty good weekend. Not great, but pretty good. bowlnin.jpgFirst off, I got to see Nine Inch Nails live for the third time (second this year), and it was a pretty good show. I had decent seats, but the Hollywood Bowl (where they played) isn't the best place to see a show like that. The sound was fantastic, but even with decent seats like I had, I was still pretty far away (although I was in the center). Anyone who's real curious to read about the show (like Dave, for instance :lol) should go here and read what myself and others who attended had to say about it.

The Red Sox qualified for the playoffs this weekend, although it's only pretty good because they're the wild card team again, with the Yankees winning the AL East Division for about the 10th or 11th time in a row (maybe more, I dunno). The Red Sox were the wild card team last year though and went on to win it all, so maybe lightning will strike twice. They start their title defense Tuesday against the White Sox in Chicago, so it's a Pink Sox series I suppose :lol

Finally, Serenity didn't exactly tank (it came in second overall with aprox. $10 million), but it certainly was not what the members of the Cult of Whedon were hoping for, and the poor showing definitely puts a sequel in doubt. I would imagine that word of mouth would have little effect on this movie in a positive way simply because all the cult members were out diligently pushing it in the weeks leading up to this weekend, so whatever damage they were going to do was already done. I predict it will fall off by at least 50% next weekend and will maybe hit $25 million in total box office domestically. Supposedly Universal said if it did $80 million worldwide box office then they'd make a sequel, but I dunno if the rest of the world can deliver more than double what the US is going to, so that's probably the end of the crew of Serenity; and it does beg the question of what will be next for Whedon. My guess is another TV show, but who knows.

I didn't end up going to see Into the Blue after all, and that movie tanked even worse than Serenity did, so I guess that should further tarnish the notion that Paul Walker is a box office draw; and it should call into question Jessica Alba's ability there as well (after Fantastic Four did so well this past summer). Instead of going to see that, J-Krue and I today went and saw A History of Violence, and I think we both liked it. It wasn't great, but we did both enjoy it. I think the ending kinda left too many things up in the air, but sometimes an ambiguous ending is good. I'm sure I'll see it again at some point (though maybe not in the theater), and I'll develop some more definite feelings about how it ended.

This week should be a somewhat busy one for me in terms of movie-going. I may end up going to see three different screenings this week (The Squid and the Whale, North Country and The Thing About My Folks), and then at some point this coming weekend I am going to really try to go see Good Night, and Good Luck, which at this point is probably the movie I'm most looking forward to seeing for the rest of the year.

Purring Like a Cat

Friday's quote was apparently so easy that you guys were annoyed (or just wanted to give me shit for making it too easy). However, when the quotes have been too difficult I have a hard time knowing if anyone's even participating because people don't generally post comments saying "I dunno". So here's the question: which is better, when the quotes are easy or tough? Tough or easy, here's today's clip:

clue #1

Update - No one's guessed it yet so here's the next clip:

clue #2

Update #2 - I "lured" J-Krue into guessing Catwoman (you should always say "lure" like Alec Baldwin in The Edge, by the way), but since that's not the right answer here's another clip:

clue #3

Update #3 - Drew got today's answer, even if he didn't come out and say it :lol so that's in the comments if you want to check it out. Here's the rest of the clips if you want to still try to figure it out on your own:

The County Recorder's Office

This past weekend, Dave for the first time ever met some of his bilogical family when he went up north to meet his two younger brothers, who are twins, and who both just turned 30. It's a pretty cool story, even if you don't know Dave, and I'd reccomend checking it out. But in case that's not really your thing, here's today's quiz instead:

clue #1

Update - I'm at work early today so here's anothe clip:

clue #2

Update #2 - Your next clip, monsieur:

clue #3

Update #3 - No one's got it yet, so I figured, "what the hell?" and decided to give you guys another clip:

Mr. Charlize Theron?

Last night J-Krue and myself went to the Arclight and saw North Country, which comes out in about two weeks or so. I thought the movie was pretty good, and it seemed like the crowd liked it as well. The movie's got a great cast in it: Charlize Theron, Frances McDormand, Sissy Spacek, Woody Harrelson, Richard Jenkins... and Sean Bean (A-Lo has pointed out that Sean Bean seems to always get the credit "and Sean Bean" for some reason, and this is no exception). I wouldn't be surprised to see Richard Jenkins get nominated for Best Supporting Actor in this one, and I'd be quite pleased to see that as well since I'm a big fan of the stuff he's done in the past. After the movie we got a special treat as the director of the movie, Niki Caro (who previously directed Whale Rider) and Charlize Theron talked about the movie and then did the usual (and always embarrasing, but more on that in a minute) Q&A. They were filming the whole thing, so maybe it'll end up on the DVD. If so, the one thing to look for is when one of the audience members asked Charlize a question that began with "I know this is a long shot, and you can definitely say no..." Uh-oh :uhoh The dude fucking asked her to marry him! Folks, we may have a winner with that question :roll Anyway, it was a pretty cool event, and I want to thank Mr. Krue for letting me tag along with him :smile Now on to today's quiz:

clue #1

Update - No guesses yet, so here's another clip:

clue #2

Update #2 - Have a clip, hot off the grill:

clue #3

Update #3 - A guess or two so far, but none right so here's another clip:

clue #4

Update #4 - No more guesses so here's another clip:

clue #5

Update #5 - If nobody gets it with this clip, I'm sure the next clue will definitely give it away, so this may be the last good chance to win it:

clue #6

Update #6 - Ok, this clip should definitely give it away. If nobody can guess it from this clip, then the clips after this probably won't help:

clue #7 (warning, there's loud swearing in this one)

Update #7 - Man, if that last clip didn't help, I dunno how much this one will, but you never know:

Short Notice

Yesterday's quiz proved to be pretty tough - tougher than I thought it was gonna be anyway. I guess I'm probably the only one who'd seen that movie :lol Oh well, here's today's quiz:

clue #1

Update - No guesses yet, but it's still early:

clue #2

Update #2 - J-Krue got today's answer in the comments, so here's the rest of the clues:

Why You Shouldn't Use iTunes Music Store

...or any other service that sells downloadable content that is wrapped in DRM technology.

I know that for some people who might visit here, this is very old news (and it is for me too, believe me), but for everyone else (the people who read that first sentence and didn't know what I was talking about), I think this is something that is very important to spread the word about. I could probably track down and quote dozens of articles (if not hundreds) that I've read over the last couple years concerning this (and anyone who regularly reads BoingBoing knows that Cory Doctrow over there is obsessed with DRM to the point where it seems to be what the majority of his entries there are about), but BoingBoing had a link to a good article today from someone who is fairly tech-savvy, but who is just now becoming aware of how bad anything that uses DRM is. If you've never heard of DRM before, or are at all unclear as to what it is, I would definitely reccomend the article to you, as it gives a much clearer explanation of everything; but I'll give a short summation of what it is and why it's bad:

DRM is technology that is added to content (like an mp3, for example) that restricts the way in which that content can be used. In the example of iTunes Music Store or Napster.com, it means that if you pay their fee to download music from them, it comes with code built in which will only allow you to play it on devices that they (Apple, Microsoft, or whomever made the DRM) approve of. In addition to this just being irritating because it forces you to buy more of their products if you want to play the music in different places; it also brings up the potentially troubling scenario of what do you do with all this music you've bought if the place you've bought it from goes under or is bought out or abandons their business strategy? As phones and mp3 players begin to merge more and more in the future (that's obviously where we're headed), think about this scenario (from the article):

if I decide to move to the Windows Mobile-based phone from the iTunes phone, none of the music I have stored on the iTunes phone can be transferred. Imagine, for example, if the phone numbers you had for your friends worked on one phone, but not the other.

Or even think about it this way: what if you're an iPod owner and some company out there comes out with a new mp3 player which blows the iPod out of the water? Or even a phone that can play mp3s which is far superior to the Motorola one that Apple has licensed iTunes to. Now you have to weigh getting the better product against the fact that none of the music you've bought from iTunes will work on it, and you'll have to re-purchase it all again (with the caveat, of course, that if you ever switch back, any new stuff you buy for the new product won't work with iTunes because it will have its own DRM). Hopefully it is apparent what the problem here is, and you can see why I would post about it. And for anyone who would defend it as not having a problem with Apple securing a monopolistic grip on something like this, I would ask you to consider one thing: Microsoft is just as aggressively (if not, moreso) pushing their own DRM-protected music around, and with video content as well. What if they also win this monopoly war and the vast majority of consumers are forced to watch movies or TV shows or listen to music on Microsoft-licensed products? Think it can't happen? Look at how many people have had to use Microsoft-licensed computers for the last couple decades...

Good Movie, Bad Title

Last night I went with Van Lambro to see The Squid and the Whale at the Arclight, and afterwards the director, Noah Baumbach, along with the actors Jeff Daniels, Laura Linney, Billy Baldwin and Jesse Eisenberg all spoke and did the Q&A thing. The movie was quite good, even though it was rather short (IMDB lists it as 80 minutes), and I would recommend it for people who are a fan of Wes Anderson movies as it somewhat reminded me of them (and Anderson produced it, which may be a reason for that). It is a "dramadey", but it was generally more funny than serious, although it deals with divorce, so there is definitely some seriousness to it.

This has been kind of a crazy week of movies for me. In the last seven days I've seen Thumbsucker, A History of Violence, The Thing About My Folks, North Country and The Squid and the Whale. Also in the last week I've seen a variety of celebrities: Peter Falk, Charlize Theron, Niki Caro and the people listed above. Also, J-Krue pointed out Giovanni Ribisi at the Arclight at one point, but he was just there seeing a movie I think. Anyway, out of all of those movies, I think that The Squid and the Whale was my favorite, even though it definitely had the worst title.

Anyway, enough about that, here's today's quiz:

clue #1

Update - No guesses yet, so here's a new clip:

Update #2 - Still no guesses, so here's another clip:

No Red Sox Repeat

Just an FYI, the Red Sox were eliminated from the playoffs today after being swept by the Chicago White Sox (who you may remember from the film Eight Men Out). If you're a Red Sox fan though, there's always that other team to root for:

Wish I Had Columbus Day Off

It sucks that it's Monday. It especially sucks that it's Columbus Day and we don't have it off at work (we don't even get the day after Thanksgiving off). Oh well, c'est la vie I suppose. Today's quiz begins with another one that has no dialogue, but rather is just some sound effects. If you have no idea though, rest assured, the rest of the clips are all dialogue:

clue #1

Update - Since it's tougher with a non-dialogue clip, here's one that has dialogue in it:

Pastiche

Last night I went with Dani, A-Lo and Mr. Burbank to go see Where the Truth Lies, and afterwards got to hear Ariana Huffington moderate a panel which included Atom Egoyan (the director) and Kevin Bacon, who is in the movie. The movie was ok, although I get the feeling that I probably liked it the best, and I was really just lukewarm on it. It's going to be unrated since the MPAA gave it an NC-17 rating and they decided to go without a rating instead, and the rating is strictly for sexual acts. It was surprising it got that rating though because there wasn't really much in it that I don't think I hadn't seen in rated R movies before. Whatever, the MPAA is a bunch of tight-asses. Anyway, after the movie came the panel, and it was downright dull. In additon to the people mentioned above there was also the producer and Snakes on a Plane's own Rachel Blanchard (although you may remember her from the 80's TV series "War of the Worlds", since I'm sure everyone saw that). Most of the panel was basically the director droning on and on about who knows what. It was rather warm in the theater and I was having trouble following him, although he did use a couple SAT words like "pastiche", which really got the crowd excited. Speaking of excitement, here's today's quiz:

clue #1

Update - Nobody's guessed it yet so here's the next clip:

clue #2

Update #2 - Much talk of Steven Segal, but no guesses, so here's another clip:

Goodbye, Cookie

Man, it's been a tiring week, and I am glad for the weekend. Today is Cookie's last day at my company, as he is following Matt over to Matt's new place of employment. Slowly but surely all my friends at work are leaving :sad Hopefully Cookie will keep in touch with us all, because we all know what the Chinese say... Anyway, happy Friday everyone, here's today's quiz:

clue #1

Update - It's Friday and I've got a lot of clips from today's movie, so here's another one:

Elizabethtown & Domino

What's everyone going to see this weekend? I kinda want to see Elizabethtown & Domino, bot both are getting absolutely hammered on the Tomatometer (28% & 14%, respectively). Cameron Crowe and Tony Scott are both directors who have had some genuinely fantastic films, but some bad missteps as well. I'm sure I'll get out and see at least one of these this weekend. What else is really pulling people to the theaters these days?

October 17, 2005

Good-Ass Salad

So this weekend I didn't go see either Elizabethtown or Domino. I still wanna see 'em though, so maybe I'll go this week. Who knows. I've already got a couple movies I'm going to see this week, namely Jarhead and Walk the Line, and I'm real excited about those. Last night I went out with my Dad and my stepmom, my stepsister and her husband and we ate at Club 41 in Old Town Pasadena. I only mention it because I think I had the best caesar salad I've ever had there last night. It really is something to eat caesar salad when they prepare it right there at your table, so if you ever have the chance to check out Club 41, I'd definitely recommend it. In other words, I've really got nothing to blog about, so without further delay, here's today's quiz:

clue #1

Update - Milkshake won, which wasn't surprising with this movie. Anyway, here's the rest of the clips:

Jarhead

I went to see Jarhead last night with J. Krue and Jen, and afterwards Sam Mendes (the director) spoke, as did Jake Gyllenhaal and Peter Sarsgaard, who both starred in it. If you haven't heard about it, it is about a guy who joins the marines and goes through training then gets sent to the Gulf War (the first one) to be a part of Desert Shield/Desert Storm. It's somewhat like Full Metal Jacket in that way, with the first part being about the training, and then the second part being about the war. Even though the movie borrowed heavily from Full Metal Jacket in some scenes and with some dialogue, it's nowhere near the movie that was (which isn't really shocking, at least, not to someone like myself who puts Kubrick up on such a pedestal :lol). Generally we all seemed to be pretty underwhelmed by the movie, and kind of felt that it tried to be so impartial in its telling of this story that it didn't really have a voice at all. It kind of played like a movie which is sort of an anti-war movie at times, and yet it very much glorified marines, and seemed like the kind of movie that marines would absolutely love. I guess in that way it's sort of like what many people feel about our current situation in Iraq, in that most people seem to be against the war there, but are supportive of the troops. I think that it was an incredibly beautiful movie, visually speaking (although I'm by no means an expert on that), but it just seemed to be lacking at its heart. Anyway, the Q&A afterwards was the typical stupid questions, but there was one that may have even topped the guy who asked Charlize Theron to marry him: a gay man in the back of the theater thanked the director for including a shower scene, and asked Jake Gyllenhaal if he would like to try "playing for the other team" and go out with him. Needless to say the rest of the audience spent the rest of the Q&A underneath our seats. Anyway, here's today's quiz:

clue #1

Update - Nobody's guessed it yet, so here's another clip:

Update #2 - No new guesses so here you go:

Fortuitous Break

Yesterday was pretty damn cool. I worked for a couple hours, and then we had a power outage, so we decided to go to lunch (ironically we had decided to go to the Philly cheesesteak place, which we were at the last time there was a power outage). As we left the parking lot, we noticed that it seemed that it was a big power outage with traffic lights out and whatnot, so we turned right around and went back to work and decided to eat at the Mexican place across the street, which oddly enough had power. Apparently there was a big outage, but it stopped after our block, so it was just far enough to kill everything at our building. Well, we ate lunch and went back and the power was still off, so we just hung out for a while, and then at 2:30 they told us all to just go home! This was very sweet, as you can imagine, and I took advantage of the early release. I decided that the time had come, so I went and bought myself an iPod nano over at the Grove, and I got the requisite RCA to mini plug so I could use it with my car stereo. I then went to Circuit City and had them hook it all up (I woulda done it myself but they needed to take my dashboard apart just to plug in a damn RCA cable). Then I came home and charged my nano and put a bunch of music on it, so now I'm an official iPod owner. I guess this means the extremely small number of people in LA who don't have either an iPod or a cell phone just got a little smaller. Anyway, here's today's quiz:

clue #1

Update - Well I'm back at work and the power is back on. Nobody's ventured a guess yet, so here's another clip:

Walk the Line

Last night I got to see Walk the Line at the Arclight, and it was a particular treat because the film doesn't come out for another month. I have to say, I really liked the movie, but I think a lot of that probably stems from my respect for Johnny Cash and because I really like his music. Now I'll admit, I've never been a hard core fan of his or anything like that, and the only album of his I own is a greatest hits album I've had for more than a decade or so; but the songs of his I am familiar with I've always loved, and I had great respect for the man for his career, from what little I knew of it. The movie was a good movie, but I don't think it was a great one. The great things about it were definitely Joaquin Phoenix and Reese Witherspoon's performances (and, amazingly, they both did all their own singing in the movie, which is very impressive, trust me), and the casting of some of the other famous singers (who were all basically unknown actors, as far as I could tell). The story is not an unfamiliar one regarding rock stars, in that Cash came from nowhere, had some childhood tragedy, grew up and had problems with drugs, but eventually overcame all that to have a long, legendary career. The movie focuses mostly on Cash, but it is also centered around Cash's long time courting of June Carter in the 50's and 60's. I won't give too much away, but to me it was not as good as The Aviator or Ray (last year's two standout biopics), in that the story of Cash maybe wasn't quite as fascinating as the stories of Howard Hughes and Ray Charles, IMO. The performances and the music definitely carry Walk the Line, and make the movie most definitely worth watching (unless you're familiar with Johnny Cash's stuff and you hate it, of course). Anyway, I would reccomend the movie to people, but don't expect it to be the favorite to win the Oscar or anything. I will say this: it did inspire me tonight to go order a bunch of Johnny Cash's CDs (used, of course) from Amazon :smile Ok, it's Friday, so here's the last quiz for the week:

Star Trek Voyager: The Arcade Game?

TeamPlay-StarTrekVoySitDown.jpg

WTF? This game can be yours for just under $8500 (scroll to the bottom of the page). Now I dunno about you, but that's gotta be money well spent, right? :lol If you're not willing to shell out that much, you can get a standup version for about half that price, but it doesn't come with that pic of 7 of 9 on the side :sad

Short Week

This is going to be a short week for me, as I'm only going to work through Wednesday. Thursday my Mom and my sister Johnetta are flying in from Texas and we're going up to Monterey with Rebecca and my Dad to meet up with my aunt and uncle and cousins and have a memorial service for my grandmother on my Dad's side who passed away almost a year ago. I'm taking Thursday, Friday and then Monday off from work for this, and since I'll be out of town I won't have internet access, so I won't be able to do the quiz while I'm gone, so you people will have to somehow figure out a way to get by with out me (whatever will you do :roll). Speaking of the quiz, happy Monday, here's today's:

clue #1

Update - No guesses yet, but I'm feeling generous, so here's another early clue:

clue #2

Update #2 - Looks like everyone's got a case of the Mondays, so here's another clip:

Update #4 - Not even one guess? Man, you guys are gonna kick yourselves when you see what this movie is

clue #5

Update #5 - No clue, huh? Pretty sad, if I do say so myself, especially since this is not an obscure movie. Here's another clip to help out:

clue #6

Update #6 - John finally hazarded a guess, but was wrong, so here's another clip. This one should help a bit more. At least, I would assume it should:

clue #7

Update #7 - This short week may get even shorter. This will be the last clue for the night. If nobody gets it from these clues, this will carry over till tomorrow:

clue #8

Update #8 - John came through at the zero hour and got it, so looks like there will be a new quiz in the morning. Shame on you guys for not getting this one earlier

Capote

Last night I went with Jen to see Capote at the Arclight and afterwards Phillip Seymour Hoffman spoke, along with the film's director Bennett Miller. I had been wanting to see Capote, and probably would have already gone to see it (it's been out for a couple weeks), except I knew this screening was coming up and thought it would be pretty cool to see Phillip Seymour Hoffman and see what he had to say, so I waited. The movie was quite good, if I do say so myself. It's not the kind of movie that would be for everyone, of course, but if you are looking for a lonely, depressing, yet interesting and tense film, this is a good one. I knew very little about Truman Capote going in, so I was definitely intrigued by the story the movie centers around (which is specifically Capote's writing of the book In Cold Blood, and is not really at all about anything that happened before or after that). The crowd seemed to definitely be impressed by the movie, and gave Hoffman a standing ovation when he came into the room (which has proven to be very rare at these screenings, so I think it showed the appreciation people there have for Hoffman's acting). Anyway, if you've seen the trailer and you think it looks like your kind of movie but you haven't been to see it yet, then you should go check it out. I wouldn't be surprised to see Hoffman get an Oscar nomination for the movie.

Anyway, John got yesterday's quiz on the last clue of the day, so here is today's quiz for you:

clue #1

Update - No guesses yet, so here's another clip:

Update #2 - Still no guesses, here's another clip:

Last One For Awhile

Today's the last quiz for almost a week. I'm gonna be out of town so after today the quiz will be on hiatus (or sabattical or whatever) until Tuesday, so whoever wins today's quiz is gonna have bragging rights for the rest of the week, for the weekend, and for Halloween. Pretty cool, huh? Matt won yesterday, but since he hates movies, I wouldn't be too worried about him repeating. In fact, everyone else should be ashamed they let a movie-hater like Matt win yesterday. Today's quiz is gonna be kinda like the history eraser button: maybe something good, maybe something bad. We don't know. Whoever wins today is my personal hero. At least till Tuesday, that is.

clue #1

Update - Movie-hating Matt and Mr. Bell both got the win today, and right on the first clue. Anyway, here's the rest of the clips:
