Pouty Bitch

Yesterday John re-established himself as a force to be reckoned with and got what was admittedly a pretty obscure movie. To be honest I wasn't really sure if there was any audio clip which would be recognizable just from the sound of it, and figured someone would have to guess it either by piecing together who was in the movie with what it sounded like they were talking about. Most of the movies I've done here have been ones where if you played the right clip, I'd assume someone here would get it just because they know the movie so well they just recognize the audio itself (like getting the beeps from War Games). But yesterday's movie was the kind of movie maybe a couple people here probably have seen, but I doubt if anyone has seen it within the last couple years (or decade even), and probably just remember a few people who were in it and vaguely what it was about. Maybe I'm wrong though, who knows. Anyway, I'm rambling. Here's today's first clip:

clue #1

Update - Cookie already got it (that was fast! :lol), but for everyone else here are the rest of my audio clues. I must admit, the rest of these clues should make it rather obvious what movie this is, but I really didn't think anyone would get it just from that first clip. Good job, Cookie :smile

A Much Needed Break

Last night I went and saw The Aristocrats with Matt, Kelly, Brett, and Matt's sister and her boyfriend, and then we ate at the Arclight and it was fucking swell. I'll say this about the movie: it's gonna have to be edited for TV if they wanna show it on prime time.

Today is Amy's last day at work with us, which is bittersweet since she's one of my favorite people at work, and she's one of the best at what she does for our company, so it will suck to not have her around anymore; but she's leaving for what sounds like a fantastic job, and oddly enough she's only moving to a different part of the building, so it's not like we'll never see her again :lol Anyway, I just felt like I should say something, so good luck, A-Lo, and bring us good gossip about who Russell Crowe assaults next :wink

Thank god today is Friday, and thank god Monday is a holiday, but damn the Man for not giving us a half-day today cause it woulda been real nice considering how we've been slaving away for the last month or twelve. On that note, here's today's clip:

Update - Ok, no guesses so far so here's the second clip:

Update #2 - Still no guesses so here's another clip:

Hurricane Katrina

I don't know if everyone is sick of the Hurricane Katrina coverage by this point or not, but I came across something which might be of interest. There was a guy who has holed up with his company, which is an ISP, on the 11th floor of a high-rise in New Orleans and they have all stayed there during the hurricane and for the days following. They have had a generator and fuel to last for over a week, and they have had an internet connection the whole time (it's what they do for a living, don't ask me how they did that), but the guy was making regular (almost hourly) updates to his livejournal throughout the whole ordeal, and it is damn fascinating and horrifying to read. Apparently the guy's been getting press coverage for days, and has had hundreds of people even watching the live webcam feed they've had going throughout the whole thing (and which is still live), so maybe I'm in the slow lane of the information superhighway on this one, but I figured there's probably a few people who might see this here who haven't already and would be curious to check out the guy's site. Here's a couple excerpts so you can see whether it might be your kind of thing or not:

8/30/05 5:04 pm - I have a lot of people telling us to abandon ship and get out. Guys, that's not gonna happen. I'll eat roaches and drink the funky Quarter sludge in the gutters of Bourbon Street long before I abandon my city. I've got resources and will and so does my team, and we're here until this is over.
8/31/05 10:51 am - You know, this crisis is going to end. One day it is going to be over, and people are going to have to live with themselves and the knowledge of how they behaved. The cowards, the thieves, the murderers. We're getting a guy on cam right now stealing tires from one car and putting them in his car. What a bunch of monkeys. No respect at all for their fellow man. Like I said, one day this is going to be over, and I hope the shame overwhelms these bastards.
8/31/05 4:32 pm - We have an inside source in the NOPD who says that command and control is in chaos. He reports that command lapses more than 24 hours between check-ins, and that most of the force are "like deer in the headlights." NOPD already had a reputation for corruption, but I am telling you now that the people we've been talking to say they are not recognizing the NOPD as a legitimate authority anymore, since cops have been seen looting in Walmarts and forcing people out of stores so they could back up SUVs and loot them.
9/2/05 11:45 am - I think it finally hit me when I was on our roof 27 floors up looking down at my city. This place will never be the same -- and I don't mean in that "can't step into the same river twice" philosophical sense. I mean in the "We won't even recognize the place" sense.
This place is completely coming apart. The hopelessness on the street breaks the heart. The old, the tired, the sick seem resigned to their presumed fate. Death.

Take note of the date and time of that last message because it was just posted a few hours ago. Things are clearly quite desperate there right now.

Kanye West is Apparently not a Bush Supporter

I got this off Fark and it has me tearing up I'm laughing so hard. While doing a telethon on NBC to raise money for the hurricane victims, the rapper Kanye West (I don't know who he is either, except he was in that Jay-Z movie we worked on) decided not to go with the teleprompter and instead went on a rambling, awkward rant about how the media are portraying black people in this whole thing. Then in one of the funniest moments I've ever seen on film, after Mike Myers tried to go back to the teleprompter, West just went for broke and said "George Bush doesn't care about black people." Now, I have to admit, this sounds like a completely partisan thing here, or at least something that's politically loaded and like there wouldn't be much humor in it, but I guarantee that whatever your politics are you're going to find this clip hilarious; because there is nothing funnier than the dumbest people in the entertainment industry giving us their serious takes on, well, basically anything :lol Watch how uncomfortable everyone is in this clip, specifically Mike Myers who looks like he wants to sink into the floor:

The Exorcism of Emily Rose

Last night I went with fhqwhgads & J-Krue to go see The Exorcism of Emily Rose at the Arclight, after which the two writers, who also directed and produced the movie, spoke and answered questions. This was a movie I'd been very much looking forward to seeing ever since I saw the trailer a month or two ago because it looked very creepy, because it was based on a true story, and because it had a pretty good cast. The guys who spoke last night hadn't really done anything of note that I can remember, so I was really more interested in just seeing the movie than hearing what they had to say, but one of the cool things about the Arclight is that they frequently have the filmmakers come out and speak about their film before it gets released, so it can be a great way to go see a movie before it hits theaters (it comes out this Friday). I think that the three of us agreed that we liked the movie, although we all thought it could have been improved upon. Basically it is a fairly ambitious undertaking in that it attempts to combine a horror movie with a courtroom drama, and it does a respectable job of doing that. The main problem that it seemed like we all had with the movie was that when it was trying to be scary, it genuinely was scary, but then the scares would be separated by these courtroom scenes which would push any sense of being frightened away, so the film wasn't really allowed to build up the scares, as it were. It did not appear to be the goal of the filmmakers to try to build the scares up, however, and the real climax of the movie has more to do with what happens in the courtroom than with what happens with the exorcism.

The filmmakers said afterwards that you would have to be crazy to make a movie about exorcism after The Exorcist because that movie did it so well that it may be the best horror movie of all time. This is a valid point, and I can see why they wanted to approach the subject not just straight on like that, but from the angle that they chose, intertwining it with a courtroom drama (it is based on the true story of a Catholic priest who was brought up on negligent homicide charges after a girl he was trying to perform an exorcism on died during the ritual). However, I disagree with the filmmakers in that just because The Exorcist is so good doesn't mean that there is a desire for more movies on the subject or that no one should even attempt to make another exorcism movie. Sure there have been other movies about exorcism that have been pretty crappy, but that doesn't mean that there isn't another great exorcism movie out there if someone can pull it off. I think that these guys could have pulled it off if that had been their goal (due in no small part to Jennifer Carpenter's portrayal of Emily Rose). Anyway, I would recommend the movie to anyone who is looking for a good scare, but I would just include the one caveat that it is not a straight-up horror movie, so expect the scares to be somewhat spread out.

The Quotes Are Back

Sorry about the last couple days not having any quotes, but since I was housesitting for my Dad I didn't have my hi-tech, fancy schmancy (sp?) equipment which I use for grabbing quotes and what have you, so I had to take a short hiatus. Never fear though, the quotes are back... with a vengeance!! Ok, that might be pushing it, but nevertheless, here's today's quote:

Short Week

It's Friday already, how fantastic is that? Seems like we just had a weekend, and now, lo and behold, we've got another one :smile I almost think that what I like most about a long weekend is that you get a short week as a result, moreso than just getting that extra day off. Anyway, it's my goal again to try to present a tough movie for the weekend so that it doesn't get answered before 11 am like yesterday's was (good job again, Mr. Bell :smile). So hopefully today's will provide a little more of a challenge, here you go:

Frozen Daiquiris

Man, the weekend definitely was not long enough, and even though I did very little, I didn't get to do enough of it :lol Anyway, it should be an interesting week at work. It is Amy's first week on her new job upstairs, it is Cookie's first week back after his Austrian hiking trip, and it is Matt's last week at work. Well, here's today's clip to get the week started:

Matt + Neelix = "Maalox?"

Even though I've been making entries a lot more regularly around here lately, they've almost all been movie quote trivia entries, and since the power outage carried yesterday's quiz over a day, I didn't make a quiz for today; and being that I don't have a quiz for today I figured I'd go ahead and make a "regular" type entry. I thought I'd take a moment to talk about the fact that Matt is leaving to go work for another company, and to say that I think all of us here in my department are going to miss him a lot. Not only does Matt take on as much or more work than anyone else here in my department (which means it's going to be a lot of work the rest of us are going to have to shoulder to make up for his absence), but Matt has also always been a guy who helps keep morale up. In that way, he's very much like Neelix from Star Trek Voyager (which, honestly, is how most of us think of him). I know Matt is probably excited to be compared to Neelix (who wouldn't be?), but it's such an obvious comparison that I'm sure he's heard it many times before. So I'd just like to say to Matt, Neelix of QC, good luck with your new job and don't be a stranger :smile

I Have the Power

The other day when LA had the mysterious power shortage there was a rather humorous comment thread on Fark about it called "Large portions of L.A. without power, reasons unknown" which elicited two responses that I thought were particularly funny. One was:

"Everything was fine with our system until the power grid was shut off by Dickless here."

And the second was:

"Not for reasons unknown. I told you, we set down there on company orders to get this thing which destroyed my crew and your expensive ship."

Anyway, I thought the shit was funny, but that's beside the point. Being a little slow, as I am, I hadn't realized that I could set my computer to automatically reboot in the case of a power failure, thus preventing the game being down for as long as it was yesterday. But I have since realized my error and have corrected the problem, so that (in theory, anyway) if there's another power failure, the game would only be down for the duration of the failure, not that plus however long it takes me to get home. Whatever, here's today's clip:

clue #1

Update - Ok, no guesses so far so here's the next clip:

Urban Remakes

Can somebody tell me what the story is with the cast of The Original Kings of Comedy (there's a suspect title if ever there was one) showing up in so many damn "urban" remakes (speaking of which, isn't it about time that "urban remakes" got its own designation as a film genre? Like you're in Blockbuster looking for Are We There Yet? and when you can't find it in the "Comedy" section, they direct you to the "Urban Remakes" section)? rap4bling_small.jpg I mean you've got Steve Harvey & Cedric the Entertainer showing up in Johnson's Family Vacation (remake of Vacation), and you've got Steve Harvey in Love Don't Cost a Thing (remake of Can't Buy Me Love); then you've got DL Hughley in Soul Plane (remake of Airplane!); you've got Bernie Mac in Guess Who (remake of Guess Who's Coming to Dinner); and finally you've got Cedric the Entertainer, who should start going by "the Original King of Urban Remakes," with him starring in the aforementioned Johnson's Family Vacation as well as The Honeymooners and coming next year in Back to School.

What is the story here? Will Hollywood not let these guys star in original movies, or do these guys just not have any original ideas? How long can this go on for? I mean, what kind of a pitch is that: "It's just like this other movie, except this time everyone in it is black!" We have enough stupid remakes, unnecessary sequels, and TV shows being made into movies without this whole new sub-genre of remakes entering into the picture. What if they start combining the two, like for instance, making a movie out of the show "Charles in Charge" but with a black family! Who's the black Scott Baio anyway? Or what if they started doing this in reverse? I mean, is there a market to see Friday done with an all-Asian cast?

Now hopefully people won't freak out on me and say this isn't a "politically correct" thing to be discussing, but it just seems like a silly gimmick to me, dontcha think? What would be some other 80's movies Hollywood could do "urban" remakes of? Better Off Dead? Top Gun? Weird Science? Romancing the Stone?

Ashton Kutcher in Evil Dead Remake?

Once again, maybe I'm riding in the slow lane of the information superhighway, but I hadn't heard this till right now. Who in holy fuck cast Ashton Kutcher in the remake of Evil Dead? Adding to the Michael Bay-produced remake of The Texas Chainsaw Massacre, this Ashton as Ash news is making me think we're witnessing a disturbing trend of remaking horror movies and deliberately aiming them away from the fans of the originals. Did the producers sit around and brainstorm on the most sure-fire way to piss off the fans of the original? Did they have a contest about it and this is what won? If so, they must have had a hell of a laugh because I can't think of a worse choice. Why take one of the most beloved cult film characters of all time and recast him with the most despised person imaginable? Why can't this crap happen to the Bond movies instead? I'd love to see Ben Affleck as Bond and kill that franchise forever, so why can't they do that instead of this?

Now's Your Chance!

Attention everyone: since J-Krue is out for a couple days (maybe) after being operated on by this guy, now is your chance to finally win! Oh Noes!

I wanna know where the phrase "Oh noes!" comes from. Now, I didn't just hear it for the first time today, so I'm not that bad, and I knew what it meant the first time I saw it (it's not rocket science, I know), but I'm just curious as to what the semantic history of the phrase is. I understand where stuff like "pwn3d" or "teh" or "!!1!!one1!!eleven" comes from, because those are obvious typos that have been goofed on; and I know where abbreviations like "wtf" or "omg" come from, but what's the story with "oh noes"? I checked the Urban Dictionary and the Encyclopedia Dramatica, but both just have definitons ("oh noes" means "oh no". Gee, thanks! :roll). Did this really just start as a typo that got goofed on? Seems like an odd typo for people to continue to make. Does anyone know what the hell is going on with this?!

oh_noes.jpg

"Oh noes! Yams doesn't know where 'oh noes' comes from!"

By the way, in doing my research for the history of this phrase I stumbled upon this rather hilarious photo. Enjoy :biggrin

New Year's Eve

It sucks that the weekend is over already, but last week wasn't quite so bad, and this week I've really got something great to look forward to (I'm going to see Nine Inch Nails at the Hollywood Bowl on Saturday). Is Very Bad to Leave Town

I didn't get enough sleep Sunday night. As I normally do on Sundays I slept in too late and as a result couldn't get to sleep at a decent hour. I made up for it last night though, I got to bed nice and early and am well refreshed for today. I haven't heard from a couple people on here in a couple days, but hopefully J-Krue is recovering nicely from his dental work, and hopefully Cletus Van Lambro enjoyed his first day on the new job. It's been really weird at work lately with him gone, and also with Milkshake and Miki missing a few days with various maladies and/or personal days. Thankfully it's slowed down considerably at work to where I've only got enough stuff to keep me real busy, as opposed to frenzied. Anyway, I'm rambling, so here's today's clip:

Nano Nano

I have never owned an iPod, and that combined with the fact that I also don't own a cell phone must put me in some kind of almost non-existant demographic (except maybe for the homeless or something), at least here in Los Angeles. Anyway, while I have no intention of buying a cell phone until the phone companies here in the US begin true pre-paid minutes (i.e. no "plan" or contract); I have recently been thinking of purchasing an iPod, and specifically an iPod Nano. It sounds like Apple has finally run up against the barrier that cell phones have, which is that you can't really make it any smaller because the screen needs to be big enough to read and the controls need to be big enough to be usable. Also, the Nano having flash memory sounded like it would be sturdy enough to not go dead on you if you happened to drop it. Plus I have a CD player in my car with an aux input, so I could easily hook it up in my car.

So I was pretty much sold on buying one, but then the other day I was having dinner with Dave and Jen and Dave told me about the complaints he'd read about online having to do with how easily the Nanos scratch. After hearing that, I decided to check it out online, and sure enough, it seems like the Nanos are not a good investment. In addition to genuine news outlets writing about the ease with which the front and screen of the Nanos scratch, a guy has started a website (which is even hosted on a .mac account) about the poor quality of the materials used, and there is even a thread on Apple's own website which is hundreds of posts long about the issue. So I think I've decided that after reading that the screen becomes so scratched you can't even read it from just handling it with your hands, or that it will as often as not crack completely if you just have it in your pocket, that I am going to remain one of the few people who is iPod-less. Maybe I'll get one when they come out with a 2nd generation Nano and I hear they've got these issues behind them. Seems like the smart thing to do, doesn't it?

No Dennis Haysbert Today

Even encumbered by post surgery stress and hard core pain medication, J-Krue still came through and got yesterday's movie; which is a movie that I liked, but I got the feeling (even when it came out) that nobody else even bothered to see. Anyway, between that yesterday and my ramblings about the iPod nano, I've blogged enough in the last 24 hours, so I'll dispense with the conversational aspect of the entry and move straight to business:

Update - Nary a guess to be found so here's the second clip:

Ground Up & In the Freezer

Milkshake pointed out that yesterday Apple's stock took kind of a tumble, dropping by as much as $3 a share at one point in the day; and I'd just like to say that next time I'll be more careful when making a blog entry like that one about the Nano. Who knew that my blog had such a large audience? :lol Enough about that, how about this:

clue #1

Update - Nobody's got it yet, so here's the next clip:

clue #2

Update #2 - Ask and you shall receive. Matt wanted another clip, so I'm happy to oblige:

Serenity Is Avoiding Anything Whedon-Related

Today's quiz is a two-parter. Actually, the first part isn't really a "quiz" so much as a question, and here it is: if Serenity tanks this weekend (and lord willing, it will bomb miserably), what effect will that have on Joss Whedon's career? Since his last two TV shows were cancelled (Firefly before it even finished the first season), if his first movie is a box-office disaster, what will he most likely end up doing next? Another TV show? Another movie? Or will he have to take a smaller role on the next project he's involved in - maybe only writing the story or something. Any opinions? Well, as a personal favor to me, please stay away from Serenity this weekend, because at the very least it will help push us ever closer to the end of Joss Whedon's reign of terror. Ok, now for today's quote:

clue #1

Update - Lambro won in like nothing flat, so the answer's in the comments. Here's the rest of the clips:

Magua

While perusing the latest Tom Cruise thread on Fark yesterday, I came across this picture and comment:

magua.jpg
"Magua said... he understands Scientologists very well."

I didn't think much of it until I saw this follow up comment:

fenian-: Magua said... he understands Scientologists very well.

    Brilliant.
I'm starting to dig this Magua "cliche".

Now I must admit, I haven't been reading Fark that closely the last week or two, so I must have missed this new Magua trend which has apparently started over there; but I have to say, I love it. How sweet is it that people are referencing Magua (of all things) over there at Fark? :lol

fenian- Magua said... he understands Scientologists very well.

Why doesn't anyone get into the cardiophagia quotes?

Magua will eat the heart of the grey hair after he puts his children under the knife, so the grey hair will know that his seed is wiped out forever.

I mean, does it get any funnier than trying to work in references to Magua when discussing something? :lol
