According to Ain't It Cool News Brett Ratner is going to direct X-Men 3. The only good news about this statement is that the source is AICN, which is run by a moron, so that means there's at least some chance that the story is not true. If this is in fact who is going to direct X-Men 3, then that franchise is dead. The bad news continues, with rumors that the script involves killing off two of the main characters, and the plot being about the father of a mutant being upset that he has a mutant kid, so he gets a serum from some other mutant which will help wipe out all mutants. If this sounds like almost the exact same plot as X-Men 2, that's because it is. Why oh why don't the studios have any idea when it comes to picking directors that will make good movies? Why do they insist on turning successful franchises (like the Alien and Predator movies) or big-name comic book movies (like the Fantastic Four) over to complete hacks like Brett Ratner, Paul W.S. Anderson and Tim Story? :nono
In other news Kurt Russell and Richard Dreyfuss are gonna star in a remake of The Poseidon Adventure and there's a Garfield sequel in the works :lol

Unfortunately it's all true. The Ratmobile rides again. What a boob.
It feels like this series has gone to filmmaking by commitee since Singer left. Everyone's probably worried if the franchise will survive, and they're playing it safe, right down the middle. Singer had a voice in it, and gave it some credibility. I think Rats will just try to borrow from the previously established and please the execs who brought him in.
I almost prefer handing this series over to Paul W.S. Anderson.

From what was said on AICN, Alex Proyas was talked about for directing X-Men 3, but supposedly he said that after I, Robot he wouldn't do any more movies for Fox until Tom Rothman is no longer in charge over there because of his insistence on strong studio involvement in that movie. Proyas is even supposed to be writing a book about his struggle with Rothman on that film.

Yeah, it seems the trades confirmed the story. My friend went to see "Red Dragon" opening night at the Grove, and sitting in the middle of the theater with his posse was Brett R. People started going up to him for autographs and pictures before, during, and after the movie. I always thought it was kind of odd that he went there on opening night, unless he really really really wanted attention. Anyhoo, he's certainly not the WORST director currently working, but I don't see what makes him right for this project. I also don't like the idea that they've made X3 into a "for hire" project.
On a different and very chilling note, my 3-year-old niece thinks "Garfield" is the greatest movie in the world. She's probably watched it about 30 times and has yet to grow bored. So I guess there's your audience for "Garfield 2" right there: toddlers.

"NOOOOOOOOO!"
That's not the sound of Darth Vader screaming, but rather the collective sound of comic book fanboys and fangirls everywhere crying at the news.
It could be worse though.
It could be Michael Bay.
Or worse... Simon West.
*shudders*
(Can you believe I still haven't seen either X-Men movie yet?!)

Man, Simon West... there's a guy who's really kinda fallen off the map, hasn't he? Odd that after directing Tomb Raider, a film Paramount clearly thought was good enough it warranted a sequel, he hasn't put anything out since. Apparently after a 5 year hiatus he's working on a remake of When a Stranger Calls. I shudder at the thought :nono

I'm still ticked off that Senor Bay is doing the Transformers movie. 'Cause I always wanted to do that. I'll probably have to settle for doing a Go-Bots movie, or if things really don't go well, a movie about Jem and the Holograms.

Dude, Micronauts!
Oh and Ponnerbell, bite your damn tongue with that Paul W.S. Anderson shit. That man should have his testicles chewed off for what he did on the worst film since "Batman & Robin". I won't even say the title. "The enemy of my enemy is my friend" indeed. Hey everybody, it's kiss a Predator day on the Paul W.S. Anderson horseshit train. Not even TODD can excuse you for putting the stutterer from "Pearl Harbor" in an Alien movie. AAAAARgh! I gotta take a nap now. Maybe I'll just look into space and point at something random.

Dude, lay off of Simon West. Can't the helmer catch a break? Without his collective genius we would have never had the priveledge of Con Air.
I thought Schumacher was responsible for the Batman & Robin trainwreck. And, um, I wasn't the one that paid to see Resident Evil in the theater. That would be Event Horizon, man!

Hey, just sayin that Simon West seems to have had to assume the role of "fall guy" for Tomb Raider, even though Paramount must have thought it was successful enough to warrant a sequel. Seems like if they were gonna banish the director, then they should have realized the movie stunk and coulda saved themselves whatever ridiculous amount they spent on the sequel.

Then you would have deprived yourself of more Jan De Bont. Are you kidding me?!

So, I'm taking Forest Lawn to stop by the credit union the other morning and there are "POSEIDON" signs with arrows pointing to a wide dirt lot full of very teamster-ish pickup trucks next to the concrete LA River basin. You just know they're going to build something huge there and pour water over it. Also, Kurt Russell will prolly dangle from it and say some heroic things. It's going to be so rad.
