Uh, I got this email from the Arclight last night informing me of some rather odd goings-on at the Star Wars shows next week (one of which, I will be attending a week from tonight). Read below for the weirdness:
- LIGHTSABER DUELS AND STORMTROOPERS!
Marshall artist sword masters from Master Replicas will present live lightsaber duels in the plaza every hour after dark, Wednesday through Saturday, May 18 - 21. The 501st Legion Stormtroopers will oversee the duels.
On Wednesday, May 18th, the 501st Legion, led by Darth Vader, will march through Hollywood to celebrate the opening of the film, returning to ArcLight around 7pm.
Let the celebration begin and may the Force be with you.

This triggered a memory for me: when I saw Episode I at the Mann's Chinese on opening night, I witnessed a full-on physical fight inside the theater. When the theater doors opened, there was a crush of people to get in, and then people literally ran for seats as though they were fleeing from a hungry Kirstie Alley. So just a couple rows in front of me, two dudes tried to claim the same seat at the same time and they ended up shoving each other, then taking swings until they fell over wrestling and punching in the aisle. It was pretty exciting. Naturally, since most of the people in the audience were Star Wars nerds and not exactly Ivan Drago, everyone just sort of sat there watching passively instead of breaking it up. I think ushers finally stepped in. perhaps if those guys had lightsabers, they could have settled their dispute in a more dignified manner.
i always thought it would be funny to find those guys today and remind them that they got into a fight over Episode I. The movie with Jar Jar Binks. Stepping in crap.

:lol That's pretty awesome. I second your desire to find those guys and ask them how they feel in retrospect about fighting over Episode I. I'd wager that they would never own up to it though.

Nerds so need to stick together. It's tragic when they get into slap fights with each other. And yeah, over Episode I?! Fighting to get out of the theater would be logical, but...
That Arclight e-mail goes into the favorite file (joining the one from work a couple weeks back notifying everyone that a car with the license plate "SKYWALKER" had its lights on). You know those replicas people are just trying to move as many $500 lightsaber toys as possible before the poo doo film unspools.
ps: How come no marathon of Episode I, Episode II and Episode III a la Lord of the Rings?
pps: I narrowly avoided being dragged to Monster In Law last night, Yams. Thank god for The Interpreter, is all I have to say. Oh, and Sean Penn's head is gigantic. You could fit three Morpheuses in there. :thumbsup

I'm not sure why there's no marathon for Star Wars, although I might guess they figure there wouldn't be enough interest if it was just the prequels. I've heard in some places they are doing a 6 movie marathon, but not out here anywhere I don't think. I'm glad to hear you avoided Monster in Law, how was The Interpreter?
