Peter Jackson

I just got back from a screening of Fellowship of the Ring a little while ago, at which Peter Jackson (the director) stayed around afterwards to do a questions and answer session for all of us nutty fans. The film was the theatrical cut, not the extended one, but that was fine with me as I hadn't seen that version of the movie in about a year and a half. The movie of course was great as always, but it was really cool to see it at the Egyptian Theatre, and especially cool to hear what Peter Jackson had to say. He showed up in what appears to be pretty typical garb for him: shorts, a somewhat baggy polo-style shirt and a big, puffy jacket. Film critic and MTV personality Chris Connelly was there as well to act as moderator. Peter Jackson had some cool things to say and he seemed like a very down to earth, easy-going guy. I won't go too much into all the stuff he said (it was mostly encouraging people who were interested to get out there and make movies on their own), but the two Return of the King related items he conveyed to us all were that the extended edition on DVD was finished editing and that it came in at 4 hours and 10 minutes long; and he also said that the "Scourging of the Shire" scene was never even filmed, so it's obviously not going to be in the movie. So there you go: it will be 50 minutes longer than the theatrical version was, and almost none of that will be more stuff at the end (so for everyone who thought the ending went on too long, you get a reprieve I suppose, in that it won't get any longer :lol). Tomorrow I am going back to the Egyptian to see The Two Towers with Sean Astin and Frodo (nČe Elijah Wood, but from now on simply known as Frodo) introducing it; and then on Sunday I'm going to see Return of the King with Peter Jackson again and the producers introducing that one, so it seems that yet again I'm turning out for the biggest Lord of the Rings dork-a-thon type events, because, well I'm a Lord of the Rings dork :wink

You fuckin' dork.

BTW, thanks for telling me about this event. I wouldn't have been able to go, at least to the Friday one, but I'm still giving you shit about it regardless. ;)

Sorry dude. I found out about it a while ago because someone I work with (Amy), her boyfriend was faxing in tickets and she wanted to know if I wanted one. By that afternoon it was sold out (as you might imagine) :sad

Likely excuse. ;)

BTW, up at 4:19 AM? WTF?! :o

excellent evening of geeking. one hitch, miramax's self-aggrandizing video commercial touting the release of dvd box sets. not to beat a dead balrog, because we discussed this on the drive back, but speaking for myself.. yes, i didn't know they were releasing these so by advertising them i now know. but, now i want to boycott miramax for their ostentatious banter and for inserting a television commercial into my otherwise boss filmgoing experience. screw you, bob and harvey.

ps: this is probably the most unrelated comment ever, but if anyone is watching 'daredevil', check out the voice on murdock's answering machine, the girlfriend dumping him? she sounds like a female cartman.

Cookie:

I also had a fun night at the "Fellowship" screening. P.J. was refreshingly down to earth. Of course there where the usual embarassing questions from the audience ("Peter, what did you DREAM about during the filming of 'Lord of the Rings'") :blush but he fielded them all with a air of seriousness and didn't speak down to anybody.

Forrest J. Ackerman was also on hand to officially name a seat in the Egyptian in honor of Peter Jackson. It was never disclosed which seat would receive the distiction.

One last thing, be careful about sitting in the balcony during any sold out show at the Egyptian. The temperature is about 10 degrees warmer up there than on the ground floor. To say the least it got a little uncomfortable after a while. Oh, well, I still had a great time.

Uh, BTW, what happened to Terrible Friday? :(

Yams:

Koga, you asked this about a week ago, please see my respone or check my entry about it here. Basically, it got old. I lost interest in doing it, and clearly everyone else lost interest in participating (yourself included, Koga). I don't like having to adhere to any kind of format like that, so instead I'll make movie-themed posts here and there when I feel like it, but that's it. If you want a movie question to answer, see Friday's entry.

elvispanda:

which is more terrible? the lack of participation in 'which is more terrible' or the lack of 'which is more terrible' itself? we're confronted by so much terribleness on a daily basis (e.g., drew barrymore infecting late night with her presence on friday), you are performing a vital public service determining the hierarchy of terrible. it's so vital, maybe you should change your site to '.org', i think you could justify that. or, maybe i'm just being terrible. but to what degree? i just don't know anymore..

Heh, I may keep asking where Terrible Friday went because there seems to be some interest in it. Oh well. :(

:( should be :frown
