Fuck the Superbowl

I hate the Superbowl. I hate anything where the advertising has clearly stolen the spotlight from the thing it was supposed to be leeching off of, and the Superbowl is the most clear case of this probably anywhere. People who never watch football turn out and tune in in droves for the fucking commercials on Superbowl Sunday. I'm not a football fan anyway, so I don't mind missing the game to avoid the commercials (the only one I've watched in the last 4 years or more was three years ago when the Giants were in it, since that was my team growing up and still technically is my team, although I don't really watch enough football anymore to qualify as a "fan" I'm sure). Tonight on my way home I was thinking it might be funny (in a really stupid way) to have an "I'm not watching the Superbowl Party", except of course that no one else would want to attend, and what would you do at something like that anyway? I wasn't really going to do something like that, it was just a fleeting thought, but I thought it was ironic then when I got home to find I'd been invited to a Superbowl Party. I haven't gone to one of these in a couple years, and really would love to avoid them for the rest of my life, except that I do love to see all my friends, of course. So I'm faced with a dilemma: go and be social with all my good buddies in spite of the commercial-worshipping, or stay home and prevent myself from being irritated at all the excitement surrounding a bunch of advertisements at the expense of seeing everyone. Any suggestions? Keep in mind that I consider advertising to be one of the most evil things in existence. For instance, if you really hate George Bush, imagine going to a Superbowl party if all they ran during the commercial breaks were pro-Bush ads and everyone else there was really excited about seeing all the new pro-Bush commercials (or anti-Bush ads if you're a real hardcore conservative). Would you still go just cause all your friends were gonna be there?

i say phuc the super bowl! however, i just agreed to go to dennis' party because i figured i would be able to see all of my good friends. maybe even you too.

elvispanda:

you're not excited about the new apple/pepsi iTunes song giveaway ad?

http://www.apple.com/itunes/pepsi/

I tape the Super Bowl and watch it later, bypassing the game and going directly for the commercials.

But Koga, I don't care about the game either If Steve-o's gonna be there though, then I'll go, cause at least I know he doesn't care about the game or the commercials either, so we can hang out and chat or something while everyone else is transfixed by what new ads are running.

Ponnerbell:

Wildyams,

First of all, you mentioned the only Superbowl he's seen as of late was with the Giants. Yes, that was the "Wide Right" game that sent the Bills packing for the first of four years - and subsequently sent several die hard Buffalo fans plummeting to their demise. Thanks a lot. Second of all, what bothers me more than the attention paid to the commericials is the fact that it's usually a boring game. They should call it SnoozeBowl. So, if you look at it that way, it will make the commercials more exciting. There really isn't anything on tv anyhow. Other networks just run paid advertisements because everyone is sucked into the SuperBowl tractor beam.

So, in short, I would go. Don't hurt yourself thinking about it. It doesn't hurt you, and you get to hang with your friends, and eat some food. If it's really that bad, why not host another LAN party?!

Will, you might as well run your errands during the game, that is if you have any errands to run of course. I'd imagine that traffic will be really light out there. ^_^

John, actually I was talking about the Superbowl where the Giants were beat by the Ravens (I think it was them) a couple years ago. Anyway, the fact that the game is boring is another reason not to go. Also, I don't care how exciting an advertisement is, I am put off by watching ads regardless of how "good" they are. When everyone went crazy over those BMW "movies" a couple years ago, the whole idea just offended me. Trying to dress up an ad as entertainment is sickening to me I think because the bottom line is they're selling you something. Now you could make this case with movies as well I guess, but for me the bottom line is that movies (I hope) do not have the primary function of selling you products. I'm already pretty anti-advertisements (or really anti anything or anybody trying to sell me something), but with the book I'm reading right now it has me even more aware than usual of these kinds of things, and they really offend me.

Enough ranting though, the bottom line is that I will go to the party just because I do want to see my friends. I just hope I can spend most of the time away from the TV set.

forget about the football game. what's interesting here is that you are so frothy at the mouth about this hatred of advertising. look, i hate suffering through ads and the endless sea of billboards just like the next obsessive compulsive fixated on advertising as an evil entity, but the truth of the matter is that there is a reason for it, and it is a necessity. what bothers me (in general) is that more attention isn't paid to them, and products purchased based on the merit or crappiness of the ads. why not treat it like another form of entertainment? i will not eat carl's jr. because their "don't bother me, i'm eating (like a disgusting pig)" ads make me ill. however, i will occasionally allow myself a jack in the box lard sandwich because their ads are actually kind of funny. advertising isn't going away, and the only one losing is you. not to mention you sound a little crazy, as i'm sure i have too on this matter. i imagine you with your lips bitten off and rocking back and forth in your chair screaming at a ford frontier ad. as far as the movie theaters go, that's another story. keep mastercard out of the multi-plex. i'd put a smiley face on here, but kelly's computer is about 900 years old and might explode if i attempt such craziness.

Yams:

LOL! Man, I know what you mean. I do get worried ranting about advertising knowing that I focus WAY too much on it and I imagine people read that and think "what the hell is wrong with this guy?" I've always been pretty opposed to advertising, but the book I'm reading now, No Logo, definitely has me even more aware than usual of how invasive advertising is, and how detrimental it is on society in general, and on individuals. At the same time I realize it is basically a completely unstoppable force that has been around much longer than I have, and that complaining about it is akin to trying to stop the sun from rising every day (which is of course what inspires the rocking chair image). In any event, I didn't let my insane hatred of advertising prevent me from being a social person and I said "yes" on my Superbowl party evite, so it looks like I've got plans for next Sunday.

iendive:

That's good, you get to see your friends and might I suggest: to not go into convulsions when the ads come on (because most likely you friend steve-o will probably end up watching them as well)get up and go for a walk outside... I know I know it's a radical idea, but give it a try. If not a walk, just get some air on the balcony or help out in the kitchen (you might learn to make toast!)
Just walk away, it's healthier!

I freaking hate the superbowl too. Actually I hate ALL sports on TV. I find sports watching on TV lame and I especially hate sports video games. I enjoy playing sports with my friends but otherwise I think its seriously stupid and boring. Even now I am sitting at a friends house during his superbowl party and typing this to you. LOL I decided that hanging out with friends was worth suffering the evil that is the freaking superbowl.
