Ok, in trying to stay away from anything movie-related this week, I found it was much more difficult to come up with contestants for this week's version of "What's More Terrible." But I thought long and hard about things that I think are truly terrible, and I think I came up with two good contestants:
America's obsession with SUV's
or
America's obsession with wanting to sue everyone
?
I'll give my answer at the end of the day in the comments section. Enjoy

This is a really tough one, but I'd have to go with America's obsession with wanting to sue everyone. As much as I loathe those gas-guzzling pieces of shit, I really hate lawyers.

They are the same. It's all about selfishness.

the people who are obsessed w/SUV's are more terrible. B/c our right to sue is one of the only checks consumers have on corproations and businesses, supress that right, and you'll find thumbtacks in your chips ahoy.

Hmmm....funny how I never heard about everyone's feelings on the SUVs when I drove to lunch. Nobody seemed to object or complain.
...very interesting....

you know, i don't know if she intended it or not but atomic kelly really made me think about my personal obssession with SUVs and how i'm probably instantly annoying when i broach the topic. i think it's pretty obvious how i feel, i don't need to rant about them. sorry if i've been boorish..
what is truly terrible is the league of extraordinary gentlemen. it's so weird but this film makes me genuinely angry. it's so distasteful, gaudy in its naked absurd incompetence.. it makes the core look watchable.

Well I'd have to say lawyers because it's the most cumulative of the two.
What do I mean? Well you can sue someone because of an SUV, but you can't SUV someone because of a lawyer :D
... and I own and suv, so I feel I oughtta stand up for suv owners who try to be aware of the issue :(
...also you could have a lawyer driing an SUV, and defining them as terrible doesn't necessarily mean they shouldn't exist (for people's right to thumbtakcless cookies)

And the answer is: America's obsession with wanting to sue everyone. While the obsession with SUVs makes the roads more unsafe and pollutes the environment, I think that the multitude of SUVs on the road is a case of things getting worse before they get better, and you will soon see (if you're not already) a shift to cars that are overly small, safer, economical and environmentally friendly as a result. The SUV thing is just a fad, and will eventually go away.
The obsession with suing everyone I think is a much more disturbing thing. People no longer want to take any responsibility for anything anymore and are instead just looking for a quick buck by basically fucking somebody over. While there are most definitely some very good lawsuits that are filed (thumbtacks in your chips ahoys, for instance), there are more and more frivolous lawsuits out there; and while suits like this one may be humorous, the aggregate result of all these lawsuits is just that more and more rules and restrictions must be enacted, thus removing our inherent rights to do something that might be in any way risky out of simple fear that someone will get sued for something they really had no part in. This mentality of not taking responsibility for your own wrongdoing and wanting to blame someone else for profit at their expense is not just a passing fad, I'm afraid, and seems if anything to grow more and more and become less and less objectionable as time goes on to where people are expected to be this way. On top of that, it leads to more and more restrictions being enacted, and less and less freedoms existing, and that hurts us all. That is much more terrible than a trend in automobiles.
On a personal note here, I'd like to say that I'm sorry this seemed to have stepped on some toes. Like all of the other rounds of "what's more terrible" this was meant to be fun, and I'm sorry that it wasn't. I think it was most likely my fault for not picking something that was more lighthearted (I was gonna have the recall in there, but thought that might get too serious). I should probably stick to good for nobody artistic bullshit when I do these things from now on I guess

i think you should all read what john said very carefully. he's right. it's very interesting.
also, i don't mean to sound bossy, but the world needs lawyers and lawsuits. it does. as long as there are huge corporations, the only thing that will keep them from poisoning us via negligence is the fear of losing cash in a lawsuit. or think of it this way, if there are republicans you need democrats.
